Organization of the visual system in larval lampreys: An HRP study

Abstract: The organization of the visual system of larval lampreys was studied by anterograde and retrograde transport of HRP injected into the eye. The retinofugal system has two different patterns of organization during the larval period. In small larvae (less than 60-70 mm in length) only a single contralateral tract, the axial optic tract, is differentiated. This tract projects to regions in the diencephalon, pretectum, and mesencephalic tegmentum. In larvae longer than 70-80 mm, there is an additional contralateral… Show more

“…In lampreys this pathway has been extensively studied in larval, transforming and adult animals [Northcutt and Przybylski, 1973;Kennedy and Rubinson, 1977;Kosareva et al, 1977;Kosareva, 1980;Repérant et al, 1980;Vesselkin et al, 1980Vesselkin et al, , 1984De Miguel et al, 1990]. Our results confirm the existence of two optic tracts that can be easily followed to their end in the superficial layers of the OT.…”

“…Following application of biocytin in the eye bulb, both retinofugal and retinopetal connections were revealed, as previously reported by using other techniques [Kennedy and Rubinson, 1977;Kosareva, 1980;Repérant et al, 1980Repérant et al, , 1982Vesselkin et al, 1980Vesselkin et al, , 1984Vesselkin et al, , 1996Vesselkin and Repérant, 1985;De Miguel et al, 1990;Rodicio et al, 1995]. Briefly, retinofugal fibers of the optic tract projected mostly to the superficial layers of the contralateral OT (SM and SO) and constituted the lateral and axial optic tracts, whereas the retinopetal cells distributed in the M5 nucleus of Schöber and the mesencephalic reticular area ( fig.…”
