Organic rice farming: an alternative to sustainable agriculture

Abstract: As the key to sustainable development, water conducts significant contributions in contemporary environmental development challenges. However, water scarcity is still happening all over the world, including agrarian countries like Indonesia. In Indonesia, agricultural sector takes up to 70% to the national water consumption. In this sector, rice contributes to 69% of national water consumption of crop commodities. To address this issue, organic system comes up as an alternative by its potential in reducing wat… Show more

“…is practice has expanded dramatically, while increasing greenhouse gas emissions and decreasing soil fertility (Irawan & Antriyandart, 2021). On the other hand, to avoid the effects of synthetic chemicals, organic farming has been promoted as an alternative way of rice production with potential to reduce water consumption and being a fit with the context of sustainable agriculture in its economic, social, and environmental aspects (de Carvalho et al, 2022;Johannes et al, 2019). Most organic paddy field practices have been reported as having rice-duck-Azolla and fish integration (Baigi et al, 2013;Cagauan et al, 2000;Chisembe et al, 2020;Safriyani et al, 2020).…”
