RESUMO -O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar o carbono orgânico e as frações húmicas de horizontes superficiais de perfis de solo em três topolitossequências no ambiente de Mar de Morros, no município de Pinheiral, RJ. Foram selecionadas as topolitossequências: T1 (basalto), T2 (muscovita-biotita-gnaisse) e T3 (gabro). Os horizontes superficiais de 14 perfis de solo, sob cobertura de pastagem (T1 e T3) e pastagem mista não manejada e leguminosa (pasto sujo/capoeira) (T2), foram descritos e coletados para análises químicas, físicas e do teor de carbono nas frações húmicas. Os teores de carbono orgânico variaram de acordo com o material de origem e decrescem na seguinte ordem: T3 > T1 > T2. Os teores de carbono orgânico aumentam do topo para a várzea na T1, ocorrendo o inverso na T3 e sem um padrão definido na T2. A fração humina predominou em todos os perfis de solo das topolitossequências e foi seguida pela fração ácidos fúlvicos na T1 e de forma equitativa entre as frações ácidos fúlvicos e ácidos húmicos na T2 e T3. Considerando o ambiente similar em termos da vegetação original e o uso agrícola, as mudanças no carbono do solo e nas frações húmicas podem refletir as interações com os componentes minerais e processos pedogenéticos, influenciados pelo material de origem e o relevo. Atributos edáficos.ABSTRACT -The aim of this study was to quantify the organic carbon and humic fractions of the surface horizons of soil profiles in three topolito-sequences from the Mar de Morros environment in the town of Pinheiral, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The topolito-sequences selected were: T1 (basalt), T2 (muscovite-biotite-gneiss), and T3 (gabbro). The surface horizons of 14 soil profiles under pasture (T1 and T3), and unmanaged mixed pasture and leguminous plants (shrub/vegetation) (T2), were marked out and collected for chemical and physical analysis, and evaluation of the carbon content of the humic fractions. The organic-carbon content varied according to the source material, decreasing in the order: T3 > T1 > T2. The organic-carbon content increased from the highest point to the lowlands in T1, with the opposite occurring in T3, and no definite pattern being seen in T2. The humin fraction predominated in all the topolito-sequence soil profiles, being followed by the fulvic acid fraction in T1, and by the fulvic and humic acid fractions equally in T2 and T3. Considering the environments as being similar in terms of original vegetation and agricultural use, changes in the carbon and humic fractions of the soil may reflect interactions with mineral components and pedogenic processes, influenced by the original material and the landscape.

“…Numerous studies on a wide variety of soil types used the cupric oxide (CuO) method to analyze the distribution of lignin-derived phenols in profiles. A typical observation is that the phenol contribution to SOM decreases (i) from forest floor to A horizons, (ii) with depth of the mineral soil, (iii) with decreasing soil particle size (reviewed in Thevenot et al, 2010) and (iv) with increasing density of soil fractions and hence phenols are contributing little to heavy (i.e., mineral-associated) and old soil fractions (Leifeld and Kögel-Knabner, 2005;Grünewald et al, 2006;Sollins et al, 2009;Kögel-Knabner et al, 2008;Cerli et al, 2012). Abstract. Uncertainties concerning stabilization of organic compounds in soil limit our basic understanding on soil organic matter (SOM) formation and our ability to model and manage effects of global change on SOM stocks. One controversially debated aspect is the contribution of aromatic litter components, such as lignin and tannins, to stable SOM forms. In the present opinion paper, we summarize and discuss the inconsistencies and propose research options to clear them.Lignin degradation takes place stepwise, starting with (i) depolymerization and followed by (ii) transformation of the water-soluble depolymerization products. The long-term fate of the depolymerization products and other soluble aromatics, e.g., tannins, in the mineral soils is still a mystery. Research on dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition and fluxes indicates dissolved aromatics are important precursors of stable SOM attached to mineral surfaces and persist in soils for centuries to millennia. Evidence comes from flux analyses in soil profiles, biodegradation assays, and sorption experiments. In contrast, studies on composition of mineral-associated SOM indicate the prevalence of non-aromatic microbial-derived compounds. Other studies suggest the turnover of lignin in soil can be faster than the turnover of bulk SOM. Mechanisms that can explain the apparent fast disappearance of lignin in mineral soils are, however, not yet identified.The contradictions might be explained by analytical problems. Commonly used methods probably detect only a fraction of the aromatics stored in the mineral soil. Careful data interpretation, critical assessment of analytical limitations, and combined studies on DOM and solid-phase SOM could thus be ways to unveil the issues.

To test relationships between net N-mineralization, organic matter and soil organisms, we combined micromorphology with laboratory incubation experiments over a soil gradient. Microbial biomass N generally increased with pH, and from sandy to loamy soil, but net N-mineralization showed the opposite, and was highest in acid, sandy soil. Twenty-two micromorphological characteristics were analyzed with principal component analysis. PC1 had high eigenvalue (0.70), and clearly separated fungi from earthworms, microarthropods and bacteria. PC2 was less important (0.15). Organic layer and sand content clearly correlated with the fungi-end of PC1, but pH and C-content of the Ah with the opposite. Microbial N also correlated with the earthwormbacteria end, but net N-mineralization did not. Efficiency of N-mineralization per unit microbe even correlated with the fungi end of PC1, in both organic layer and mineral topsoil. The results support the hypothesis that high (or low) litter turnover and biological activity can be counteracted by high (or low) microbial N-demand.
