The inhibiting action of aniline and some of its derivatives (o-, m-and p-anisidine) towards the corrosion behaviour of nickel in 1 M HCl solution has been studied using weight loss and polarization techniques. These compounds were found to retard the corrosion rate of nickel. At constant temperature, the corrosion rate decreases with increasing inhibitor concentration. On the other hand, at any inhibitor concentration, the increase in temperature leads to an increase in the corrosion rate. The activation energy, DE a , the equilibrium constant, k, as well as the other thermodynamic parameters (DG o ads , DH o ads and DS o ads ) for inhibitor process were calculated and analysed. The inhibitor ef®ciencies calculated from both weight loss and polarization methods are in good agreement and were found to be in the order: p-anisidine b o-anisidine b m-anisidine b aniline. The inhibitive action of these compounds was attributed to the adsorption of molecular species and their inhibitive ef®ciencies depend on the relative position of the ÐOCH 3 group in the aniline ring.

Polyaniline as corrosion inhibitor for iron in acid solutions

ABSTRACT:In recent years, polymer amines have been studied as an efficient corrosion inhibitor for iron in acid media. In this article, the performance of water soluble polyaniline as corrosion inhibitor for iron in 0.5M H 2 SO 4 has been evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization, linear polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and compared with the performance of the aniline monomer. It has been found that polyaniline is an efficient inhibitor, since the maximum efficiency of 84% has been observed at a concentration of 100 ppm, whereas the monomer has accelerated the corrosion. FTIR studies have shown that the polyaniline is strongly adsorbed on the iron surface and inhibits the corrosion effectively. However, aniline has been found to improve the passivation tendency of iron at higher concentrations.
