Geo log i cal Quar terly, 61 (1): 214-226, doi: 10.7306/gq.1338 Ran dom vitrinite reflectance of allochthonous plant ma te rial var ies through out all the flysch sed i men tary units of the Outer West ern Carpathians. The vitrinite reflectance of coalified phytogenic mat ter is vari able even within the same lithostratigraphic unit. There is no clear re la tion ship be tween ran dom vitrinite reflectance and stra tig ra phy (age of par tic u lar strata) within sur face sam ples. The typ i cal pat tern of in creas ing ran dom reflectance with depth in bore holes is un set tled by R r o "jumps" which oc cur within folds and overthrusts. How ever, this study re vealed a trend of in creas ing ran dom vitrinite reflectance from north to south in the area of the Magura Unit. A compressional re gime in volv ing phases of up lift and burial, vary ing from place to place in the flysch ba sin, was the main fac tor in flu enc ing coalification. The ini tial ma tu rity of or ganic mat ter trans ported to the ma rine en vi ron ment was a sec ond ary fac tor. A de gree of coalification had oc curred in the flysch sed i ments prior to the main stage of fold-and-thrust move ments as so ci ated with the phase of max i mum tec tonic sub si dence at the end of the Eocene. It is gen er ally as sumed that coalified plant ma te rial dis persed in sed i men tary rocks ex pe ri enced the same phys i cal and chem i cal changes as those in larger ac cu mu la tions of coal. Coalification of phytogenic ma te rial co eval with flysch in the Outer Carpathians cor re sponds to the in ter val from sub-bi tu mi nous to low-me dium-rank bi tu mi nous coal.

Oils from two main ac cu mu la tions, oc cur ring in Up per Cre ta ceous sand stone and Up per Ju rassic lime stone res er voirs, have been ana lysed in or der to iden tify their or i gin and re la tion to the known pe tro leum sys tems in the re gion of the Outer Carpathians and the base ment of the Carpathian Foredeep. Re sults of geo chem i cal in ves ti ga tions of oils, in clud ing biomarker and iso to pic data, show a good cor re la tion with oils ac cu mu lated in Carpathian flysch strata. The oils are low-sul phur and did not un dergo sig nif i cant deg ra da tion. They were gen er ated from Type II or II/III kerogen, de posited in anoxic en vi ron ments in clastic sed i ments. Gen er a tion oc curred at the peak of "oil win dow", prob a bly in the tem per ature range of 122 to 126 o C. The pres ence of oleanane in di cates Cre ta ceous or youn ger source rocks. Good cor re la tion of biomarker and iso to pic data with the or ganic mat ter dis persed in the Oligocene Menilite Beds oc cur ring at the top of the Carpathian flysch suc ces sion al lowed iden ti fi ca tion of these as source rocks for oils of the Lopushna field, which thus can be re garded as an oil fam ily of the Outer Carpathians. The mi gra tion dis tance for both the Lopushna oils and oils ac cu mu lated in the Carpathian flysch strata was sim i lar. A num ber of sub-ver ti cal dis lo ca tions, along which the sub sided flysch strata oc cur at the same depth level as the Ju ras sic and Cre ta ceous rocks of the plat form, can be as sumed as pos si ble mi gra tion pathways from the ma ture source rocks of the Oligocene Menilite Beds of the Boryslav-Pokuttya, Skyba or Krosno units to the Lopushna type traps, which sug gests the pos si bil ity of ex is tence of other hy dro car bon ac cu mu la tions of this type. The Lopushna field so far is unique in con tain ing this type of oil found in the base ment of the Ukrai nian Carpathian Foredeep.

The de pos its un der went diagenesis well below 100°C, and their evo lu tion ary path ways of diagenetic and re lated res er voir prop er ties rep re sent eo-and mesodiagenesis. Eodiagenesis here com prised me chan i cal com pac tion, de vel op ment of chlorite, microcrystalline cal cite, py rite, sid er ite, kaolinite and quartz, and dis so lu tion of feld spar and mica grains. Mesodiagenesis in cluded quartz and K-feldspar overgrowths, albitisation, crystallisation of do lo mite and an ker ite and coarsely crys tal line cal cite, dis so lu tion of feld spar grains and car bon ate ce ment, and illite growth. The iso to pic data of d 18 O VPDB of car bon ate ce ments sug gest their crys tal li sation from porewater which is a mix ture of ma rine and me te oric wa ters. The d 13 C VPDB val ues sug gest der i va tion of car bon from mi cro bial methanogenesis of or ganic mat ter. The 87 Sr/ 86 Sr val ues in coarsely crys tal line cal cite are higher than those of Badenian sea wa ter. The ra dio genic stron tium may have been sup plied dur ing diagenesis by me te oric wa ters drain ing the con ti nen tal area. The Mid dle Mio cene sand stones show better fil tra tion abil i ties (good and very good) in the west ern part of the study area (Po land) than in the east. Pri mary inter gra nu lar po ros ity is more fre quent than sec ond ary intragranular and intercrystalline po ros i ties.The pri mary po ros ity was di min ished due to com pac tion and ce men ta tion from west to east. Some in crease in po ros ity was caused by dis so lu tion of de tri tal grains and by de cay of soft parts of or gan isms.
