Organ-Specific Phytochemical Profiling and Antioxidant Analysis of Parthenium hysterophorus L.

Abstract: Parthenium hysterophorus is a weed of global concern with high threshold of tolerance against most of biotic and abiotic stresses. Phytochemical profile and in vitro antioxidant analysis may help in understanding its tolerance to stresses. Root, stem, leaf, phyllary, and receptacle (including disc and ray florets) were chemotyped employing GC tof-MS and assessed for antioxidant activity by DPPH, FRAP, HRSA, and TAC assays. Phytochemicals identified were terpenes, fatty acids, hydrocarbons, phytosterols, and co… Show more

“…29 The 3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-2-hexadecen-1-ol is an unsaturated long-chain fatty acid alcohol. 30 It was accumulated very high in TAG 24 leaves in stress conditions, efficiently scavenging the free radicals and imparting drought tolerance by protecting plants against oxidative stress. 31 Our results draw attention to palmitic acid, which shows a negative correlation with the drought stress response.…”

“…β-Cedrene is a component of Juniperus virginiana (eastern red cedar) essential oil [ 90 ] and the floral scent of Bearded Irises (Family: Iridaceae) [ 91 ]. β-Vatirenene has antioxidant activity and is produced by the plants Valeriana jatamansi (Family: Valerianaceae) [ 92 ] and Parthenium hysterophorus (Santa Maria feverfew) [ 93 ]. Aromadendrene oxide-(2) is a component of Pamburus missionis (Family: Rutaceae) essential oil [ 102 ], which induces apoptosis in skin epidermoid cancer cells [ 135 , 136 ], whereas calamene is extracted from Eryngium carlinae (toad’s herb) and displays potential antioxidant activity [ 103 ].…”

“…Parthenin has remained the focus of numerous studies evaluating the allelopathic potential of parthenium weed [ 12 , 13 , 38 ]. It is produced and sequestered in the highest concentrations in the leaf trichomes of parthenium weed, but it is not transported to the roots [ 30 , 33 ].…”

“…The phytochemistry of parthenium weed has also been investigated, with a diverse set of metabolites identified in its leaves, shoots, roots and inflorescences [1,2]. Several secondary metabolites have been associated with stress tolerance [12] or allelopathic activity [10,13]. One of the most abundant and well characterised bioactive metabolites is the sesquiterpene lactone parthenin.…”
