Production of Plant-Associated Volatiles by Select Model and Industrially Important Streptomyces spp.

Abstract: The Streptomyces produce a great diversity of specialized metabolites, including highly volatile compounds with potential biological activities. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by nine Streptomyces spp., some of which are of industrial importance, were collected and identified using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) present in the genomes of the respective Streptomyces spp. were also predicted to match them with the VOCs detected. Overall, 33 specific VO… Show more

“…Besides antibiotics, Streptomyces spp. produce VOCs reducing the severity of plant diseases, causing morphological abnormalities in different fungal pathogens [215,216]. Species of Streptomyces that were found to be antagonistic to R. solani can produce more than 10,000 secondary metabolites, including antibiotics and VOCs [217].…”

“…Streptomyces spp. can produce butanone (methyl vinyl ketone) and dimethyl disulphide, which inhibit the spore germination of Cladosporium cladosporioides [216]. Streptomyces albus can produce anisole that acts against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and F. oxysporum [220].…”

“…Some of these signals (VOCs, for example: alcohols, alkanes, ketones, terpenoids, etc.) operate as communicators within the microbial communities in the rhizosphere [ 25 , 131 , 165 ]. These compounds promote several functions, such as disease inhibition, nutrient acquisition, improved growth and development, mineralization, and other processes.…”
