Orem’s Self-Care Model with Multiple Sclerosis Patients’ Balance and Motor Function

Abstract: Orem’s self-care model has been introduced as a nursing model to empower participants with chronic diseases. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of nursing interventions using Orem’s self-care model with multiple sclerosis participants’ balance and motor function. Sixty-three participants with multiple sclerosis were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The nursing intervention using Orem’s self-care model was performed for eight sessions of 45–60 minutes in the intervention group… Show more

“…The VAS score, Barthel index, and HHS were significantly different postoperatively between the intervention and control groups. This finding was in line with previous studies using this intervention model for other orthopedic and neurological conditions (Afrasiabifar et al, 2020; Hashemi et al, 2014; Xu et al, 2020). All the patients in the intervention group received counseling services and started to take part in the nursing program as soon as they were admitted.…”

“…However, this represents an unnaturally slow speed for most, and it could be argued that not many patients would be expected to walk at this speed. Still, the speed is relevant, as slow speed could likely occur in a domestic setting, doing house chores, and other activities of daily living (ADL) [ 29 ]. At higher speeds the small variation could likely be attributed to experimental bias, e.g., when the first and last step are counted.…”

“…Among the possible challenges to theory-based practice is that the SCDNT addresses specific practical aspects of nursing practice rather than conceptualizing the nature of the nursing activity. Despite this limitation, the SCDNT offers the necessary simplicity, clarity, and logic to serve as the preferred framework for many APNs undertaking chronic disease management in primary healthcare settings (Afrasiabifar et al., 2020), such as the APN observed in the current case study. Moreover, the model offers a clear roadmap for the coordination of nurse–patient relations and establishes the actions to be undertaken by both partners to ensure the mutually desired outcome of boosting the patient's SCA.…”
