Twenty-nine Arenig and Llanvirn trilobite species, representing 20 genera in the Asaphidae, Cyclopygidae, Dikelokephalinidae, Nileidae, Raphiophoridae, Remopleurididae, Taihungshaniidae and Trinucleidae, are treated in a taxonomic review of the South Chinese Asaphida. This review is based on large collections of trilobite material made from five formations at nine localities in western Hubei, northern Hunan and southern Shaanxi, representing a wide range of benthic marine environments across the Yangtze Platform and Jiangnan Transitional Belt regions of the South China Plate. Most South Chinese representatives of the Asaphidae are reassigned to the Nobiliasaphinae on the basis of cranidial and hypostomal characters, and taxonomic revisions are given for Liomegalaspides and Opsimasaphus pseudodawanicus. Taihungshania shui and T. tachengssuensis are revised and redescribed, and the establishment of lectotypes for these species and T. brevica clarifies the status of the type material of Taihungshania. Nileus walcotti is revised and restricted biogeographically to the South China Plate; material from Xinjiang previously assigned to this species is reassigned to N. sericeus sp. nov. The new raphiophorid species Raphioampyx sinankylosus is described. Aocaspis, Incaia and Raphioampyx are recorded for the first time from South China, and the latter two genera are also recorded for the first time from the Arenig.

The trilobite fauna of the upper Katian (mid-Ashgill in terms of Anglo-Welsh chronostratigraphy) Oriel Brook Formation in the Grangegeeth Terrane, eastern Ireland comprises 16 species. It is dominated numerically by mesopelagic cyclopygids (Cyclopyge cf. marginata Hawle and Corda and much rarer Symphysops sp.), which comprise 63% of the 156 identifiable sclerites known unequivocally from the formation. Other elements of the trilobite fauna include species of Staurocephalus, Phillipsinella, Nankinolithus and the agnostids Trinodus and Sphaeragnostus. The abundance of cyclopygids in a terrane interpreted as lying within the Iapetus Ocean closer to Laurentia than the Anglo-Welsh sector of Avalonia is consistent with the Late Katian spread of cyclopygids onto low latitude shelves seen in Quebec and Maine in eastern North America, Girvan in SE Scotland and Co. Clare in the Irish Central Terrane. With the exception of the agnostid trilobites, whose mode of life is strongly debated, associated benthic trilobites lacking eyes are fairly rare and the bottom-dwelling fauna does not conform to the atheloptic assemblages that typified many mid-to high latitude Ordovician outer shelf and upper slope settings. The benthic assemblage can be considered in terms of a bathymetrically arranged spectrum of faunas and is closest to that of the deep shelf Phillipsinella parabolaStaurocephalus clavifrons fauna, known from the Upper Ordovician of Avalonia and Baltica and to some extent marginal Gondwana and South China. This is the first record of such a fauna from Laurentia or its marginal terranes and reflects the Late Ordovician breakdown of provincialism in the Iapetus Ocean. The deep-water setting is compatible with that of the associated Foliomena brachiopod fauna.

Middle to Late Ordovician (late Darriwilianearly Katian) trilobites from trinucleid, raphiophorid and cyclopygid biofacies are for the first time documented from the West Balkhash and North Betpak-Dala regions in southcentral Kazakhstan. Twenty taxa are described; six of them, that is, Miaopopsis sokyrensis sp. nov., Pricyclopyge keralensis sp. nov., Kongqiaoheia sarytumensis sp. nov., Shumardia karasaiensis sp. nov., Triarthrus akkermensis sp. nov. and Mynaralaspis perforata gen. et sp. nov. are new to science. Six taxa are reported in open nomenclature and two are not identified on a genus level.A new trinucleid Subfamily Nanshanaspinae is designated. Newly discovered faunas show strong links to contemporaneous faunas of Tarim and, to a lesser degree, to those of South China and the Australian sector of Gondwana. Based on results of cluster analysis (Dice similarity), trilobite associations of raphiophorid biofacies from the Chu-Ili and Stepnyak terranes form a single first-order cluster with little similarity to the trilobite associations characteristic of the nielid and illenid-cheirurid biofacies from the Stepnyak and Tarbagatai regions. Also, there is no distinct interaction between the pelagic Degamella-Pricyclopyge association and other trilobite faunas. The geographical distribution of raphiophorid and trinucleid trilobites described in this paper, including species of genera Malongullia?, Miaopopsis, Nanshanaspis and Kongqiaoheia, supports Ordovician palaeogeographical reconstructions showing the Kazakh terranes as part of a huge archipelago situated on both sides of the equator in proximity to the west coast of Gondwana and positioned a considerable distance from the Siberia continent and its associated terranes.
