Orbital Cysticercosis

Abstract: Excisional biopsy is recommended for subconjunctival cysticercosis. Idiopathic cystic myositis can present like EOM cysticercosis, but is differentiated by resolution with corticosteroid treatment. Medical therapy in orbital cysticercosis with oral albendazole and corticosteroids can arrest recurrent inflammation and improve ocular motility.

“…In the ocular form, the most favoured sites are the vitreous and the subretinal space [3]. Orbital manifestations are ocular motility disorder, proptosis, conjunctival cyst and acquired blepharoptosis [1]. The inferior rectus [2] and the medial rectus [4] are the most common extraocular muscles involved.…”

“…The extraocular muscle form is the most common type of orbital cysticercosis (33)(34)(35). In the ocular form, the most favored sites are the vitreous and the subretinal space whereas the inferior rectus and the medial rectus are the most common extraocular muscles involved (33)(34)(35).…”

In the ocular form, the most favored sites are the vitreous and the subretinal space whereas the inferior rectus and the medial rectus are the most common extraocular muscles involved (33)(34)(35). Intraocular cysticercosis is predominant in the Western countries, whereas extraocular is more common in the Indian population and several authors have attributed geographic and environmental factors to this difference (33)(34)(35).…”

“…6,21,22 Extraocular myocysticercosis :-Cysticercosis of extraocular mucle usually presents as recurrent pain, redness, proptosis, ocular motility restriction, diplopia and ptosis. 23,24 One or more extraocular muscles may be simultaneously involved, although a propensity for involvement of the superior muscle complex and the lateral rectus muscles has been reported. 22,25 Depending on the muscle involved, clinical findings of Duane Retraction Syndrome or Brown Syndrome may be observed.…”
