Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease caused by multiple factors and is considered to be a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke and various cancers. Hesperidin, a flavanone glycoside, is a natural phenolic compound with a wide range of biological effects. Mounting evidence has demonstrated that hesperidin possesses inhibitory effect against obesity diseases. Our review discusses mechanisms of hesperidin in the treatment of obesity. Hesperidin regulates lipid metabolism and glucose metabolism by mediating AMPK and PPAR signaling pathways, directly regulates antioxidant index and anti-apoptosis, and indirectly mediates NF-κB signaling pathway to regulate inflammation to play a role in the treatment of obesity. In addition, hesperidin-enriched dietary supplements can significantly improve symptoms such as postprandial hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. Further clinical trials are also required for confirming lipid-lowering efficacy of this natural flavonoid and evaluating its safety profile.

Hypertension is a chronic disorder that contributes to cardiovascular disease (World Health, 2009). Currently, it is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in people worldwide (James et al., 2014). Hypertension associated with sexual dysfunction has been reported in male patients with hypertension (Fogari et al., 2001). Additionally, decreased sexual activity has been observed in male patients with essential hypertension, which has been associated with reduced testosterone levels (Fogari et al., 2002). A previous study has reported that serum total testosterone and epididymal sperm motility are significantly reduced in rats with nitric oxide (NO) depletion (Adedara et al., 2018). It is well known that testosterone is an essential hormone for the initiation and maintenance of spermatogenic processes (Chauhan et al., 2007), synthesised by testicular Leydig cells using cholesterol as its substrate (Li et al., 2011). The aim of the study was to examine possible impacts of paroxetine and agomelatine on the levels of some components that constitute the seminal vesicle fluid. As a second purpose, it was also aimed to examine how possible negative effects induced by paroxetine on seminal vesicle fluid components were affected by kisspeptin and RF9 (an RFamide‐related peptide antagonist, RFRP). Forty‐two male rats, aged 21 days, divided into six groups; control, sham, paroxetine, agomelatine, paroxetine + kisspeptin and paroxetine + RF9. Paroxetine (3.6 mg/kg) and agomelatine (10 mg/kg) were administrated by oral gavage. Kisspeptin (1 nmol) and RF9 (20 nmol) were administered intracerebroventricular (i.c.v). The experiments were ended on post‐natal 120 days; fructose, vitamin E, sodium, potassium and magnesium levels were measured in seminal vesicle fluid. Fructose, vitamin E, magnesium and potassium levels were significantly decreased in seminal vesicle fluid from the rats treated with paroxetine but did not show significant differences following agomelatine administration. The co‐administration of kisspeptin or RF9 with paroxetine prevented the paroxetine‐induced negative effects on seminal vesicle fluid components. These results suggest that reduction in sperm fertilising ability caused by changes in seminal vesicle fluid can be seen in long‐term antidepressant use. RF‐9 and kisspeptin might have positive effects on long‐term antidepressant use‐induced infertility.
