Orange Juice and Cancer Chemoprevention

Abstract: Orange juice (OJ) is among the most consumed fruit juices worldwide, and its chemopreventive action is fairly addressed in the literature. This review critically presents the available evidence linking OJ with cancer chemoprevention and on discussing the putative mechanisms and negative health effects. The chemopreventive action of OJ is related to its effect on metabolic enzymes and its antiinflammatory, cytoprotective/apoptotic, hormonal, cell signaling-modulating, antioxidant, and antigenotoxic effects. “…Orange juice has several beneficial properties. Vitamin C, folate, and other compounds such as carotenoids and phenolic compounds, reduce damage to the DNA and may give protection against mammary, hepatic and colon cancers, and may help prevent degenerative diseases (Tripoli et al 2007;Rech Franke et al 2013), such as atherosclerosis and coronary heart diseases (Keli et al 1996;Steinmetz and Potter 1996). In addition, alcoholic fermentation of orange juice increases its melatonin levels, due to the presence the amino acid precursor, tryptophan, in the composition of the juice.…”

“…These compounds have been found to exert antioxidant, hypotensive, vasodilator, anti‐inflammatory and hypolipidemic effects, among others . Furthermore, numerous epidemiological and intervention studies have demonstrated the protective and therapeutic role of regular orange juice consumption against chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, obesity and cancer , . Observations of these beneficial effects of orange juice have increased research interest in technological treatments to preserve or enhance the bioactive compounds it contains , .…”

“…[7][8][9] Furthermore, numerous epidemiological and intervention studies have demonstrated the protective and therapeutic role of regular orange juice consumption against chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, obesity and cancer. 3,[10][11][12] Observations of these beneficial effects of orange juice have increased research interest in technological treatments to preserve or enhance the bioactive compounds it contains. 13,14 Alcoholic fermentation of various types of fruit 15,16 has generated new products with moderate alcohol content and a higher concentration of bioactive compounds than in the original substrate.…”

“…6 Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cytoprotective, antigenotoxic, and antitumoral constituents have been identified in orange juice. 7 Consumption of fruit juice is also associated with health concerns; for example, a meta-analysis of cohort studies showed that the regular intake of sugar-sweetened (but not 100% natural) fruit juice increased the risk of diabetes mellitus. 8 Additionally, many fruit juices contain substances that can cause drug interactions.…”
