Orally Administered Probiotics Decrease Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans but Not Other Periodontal Pathogenic Bacteria Counts in the Oral Cavity: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Introduction: At the initial part of the gastrointestinal tract, multiple tissues serve the normal function of food delivery. Periodontal structures are integral elements of these. When they deteriorate, it is extremely challenging to regenerate and reconstruct them. The conventional intervention for periodontal disease is scaling and root planning with the aim of reducing pathogenic bacteria. However, periodontal pathogens can rapidly recolonize treated areas. Probiotics have been proposed as novel tools for … Show more

“…Biofilms are observed on some tooth surfaces, enamel and other parts of the oral cavity due to the adhesion, aggregation and colonization of various bacteria [ 58 , 59 ]. When the microbial community in the oral cavity is imbalanced, various oral diseases may occur, which in turn, affects the health of different parts of the body [ 60 ].…”

“…One such approach is the direct application of live microorganisms that can confer a health benefit to the host, commonly referred to as probiotics 4 . While several probiotic strains have shown beneficial effects for oral health 5 – 11 , other studies assert a more limited benefit for their use 12 15 . Though the current opinion on oral probiotics may seem mixed, differences in strain effectiveness are often not taken into consideration.…”

“…In combination with fluoride, their administration prevented or slowed the early demineralization of enamel [ 56 , 61 , 62 ]. In one study, a significant reduction in Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans , but not other periodontal pathogenic bacteria, occurred with probiotic administration in the oral cavity [ 63 ]. The science of probiotics using non-pathogenic oral bacteria, such as Streptococcus Salivarius M18 , creates strain-specific and tissue-mediated antagonism by releasing bacteriocins (salivaricins) with antibiotic action [ 64 , 65 ].…”
