Oral Magnesium Oxide Prophylaxis of Frequent Migrainous Headache in Children: A Randomized, Double‐Blind, Placebo‐Controlled Trial

Abstract: This study does not unequivocally determine whether oral magnesium oxide is or is not superior to placebo in preventing frequent migrainous headache in children, but treatment with the active agent did lead to a significant reduction in headache days. Larger trials involving this safe, appealing complementary therapy are needed.

“…When compared with healthy control, pediatric migraine patients (with and without aura) showed a significant reduction in serum, red blood cells, and mononuclear blood cell magnesium concentration (Mazzotta et al 1999, Soriani et al 1995. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Wang et al 2003), children and adolescents ages 3-17 who were given magnesium oxide showed a statistically significant trend toward headache frequency reduction, although the primary outcome measure was not significantly different.…”

“…Reduction in migraine headache frequency and severity was demonstrated in pediatric patients by Wang and colleagues [6]. In this placebo-controlled trial, 58 patients supplemented with oral magnesium oxide 9 mg/kg/day in three divided doses (elemental magnesium 5.4 mg/kg/day) for 16 weeks exhibited a significant downward trend in the frequency and severity of migraine headaches.…”
