Oral lactobacilli in chronic periodontitis and periodontal health: species composition and antimicrobial activity

Abstract: The composition of oral lactoflora in chronic periodontitis and healthy subjects differs, with a higher prevalence of homofermentative lactobacilli, particularly L. gasseri, in the latter group. Both homo- and heterofermentative oral lactobacilli suppress the growth of periodontal pathogens, but the antimicrobial properties are strain, species and origin specific.

“…Lactobacilli coaggregate with F. nucleatum at nearly 90%, thus modulating composition of oral biofilms. 11 Lactobacilli had been shown to be the strongest inhibitor of AActinimycetemcomitans, P gingivalis and P intermedia, potent microorganisms responsible for periodontal destruction. 20 Probiotic microorganisms do not act exclusively by affecting the microbiota, but also protect the oral cavity through the promotion of a beneficial host response.…”

“…27 Ishikawa et al observed in vitro inhibition of P. gingivalis, P. intermedia, and P. nigrescens by daily ingestion of L. salivarius in tablet form. 28 L. acidophilus contained in a tablet named Acilact was first clinically tested by pozharitskaia et al in 1994 and they found improved clinical parameters in periodontitis patients and shifts in local microflora towards gram positive cocci and lactobacilli. Later in the year 2002 Grudianov et al also carried out a clinical study where they obtained a probiotic mix in the tablet forms, viz Acilact and Bifidumbacterin and found normalization of micro flora and reduction of signs of gingivitis and periodontitis.…”

“…Production of lactic acid (a short chain fatty acid) can penetrate the bacterial membrane and acidify the cytoplasm by inhibiting the proliferation of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Streptococcus mutans [22] and Prevotella intermedia [23]. Lactobacillus gasseri is a homofermentative bacteria (metabolism via glycolysis) that is able to produce large quantities of lactic acid.…”
