Role of Probiotics on Oral Health - A Randomized, Double Blind, Placebo-Controlled Microbiological Study

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate commercially available combined probiotic formulation for its effect on plaque, gingivitis and salivary Streptococcus mutans levels in subjects with chronic gingivitis. A total of 36 subjects were finally enrolled in a double blind placebo controlled randomized trial. Selected subjects were randomly divided in two groups; Group A (Control group) with 17 subjects, receiving placebo tablets twice daily and Group B (Probiotic group) with 19 subjects receiving probiotic tab… Show more

“…Few studies had been carried out to deliver oral probiotics using capsules (Table 2). Dhawan and Dhawan [5] there is a significant reduction in plaque and gingivitis score from week 1 to week 3 in the probiotic group. However, after going through the study, it is found that the researchers did not compare statistically on the plaque, gingivitis and S. mutans level between the treatment weeks within the probiotic group.…”

“…Few studies had been carried out to deliver oral probiotics using capsules (). Dhawan and Dhawan [5] evaluated the effectiveness of probiotics capsules ( Lactobacillus sporogenes , Streptococcus faecalis T-110JPC, Clostridium butyrium TO-A, Bacillus mesentricus TO-AJPC) on the plaque, gingivitis and S. mutans level in chronic gingivitis patients where the patients were divided into two groups (placebo and probiotic group).…”

“…Recent research, including clinical trials, clearly suggests that probiotics can help prevent and treat oral infections, such as tooth decay and other periodontal diseases. Probiotics have the unique capacity to form a biofilm, which functions as a protective lining and aids in the replacement of any pathogen that thrives in biofilms [ 15 , 16 ].…”
