Introduction: Nowadays, nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted much attention in biomedical imaging due to their unique magnetic and optical characteristics. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are the prosperous group of NPs with the capability to apply as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. Radiolabeling of targeted SPIONs with positron emitters can develop dual positron emission tomography (PET)/MRI agents to achieve better diagnosis of clinical conditions. Methods: In this work, N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan (TMC)-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) conjugated to S-2-(4-isothiocyanatobenzyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane tetraacetic acid (DOTA) as a radioisotope chelator and bombesin (BN) as a targeting peptide (DOTA-BN-TMC-MNPs) were prepared and validated using fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) tests. Final NPs were radiolabeled with gallium-68 (68 Ga) and evaluated in vitro and in vivo as a potential PET/MRI probe for breast cancer (BC) detection. Results: The DOTA-BN-TMC-MNPs with a particle size between 20 and 30 nm were efficiently labeled with 68 Ga (radiochemical purity higher than 98% using thin layer chromatography (TLC)). The radiolabeled NPs showed insignificant toxicity (.74% cell viability) and high affinity (IC 50 =8.79 µg/mL) for the gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP)-avid BC T-47D cells using competitive binding assay against 99m Tc-hydrazinonicotinamide (HYNIC)-gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-BN (7-14). PET and MRI showed visible uptake of NPs by T-47D tumors in xenograft mouse models. Conclusion: 68 Ga-DOTA-BN-TMC-MNPs could be a potential diagnostic probe to detect BC using PET/MRI technique.

Vaccines are the most effective means of controlling infectious diseases. Increasingly epidemics have driven the development of vaccines for human use. However, insufficient attention has been paid to preventing animal epidemics. The spread of animal epidemics directly affects food and nutritional safety, the economy, and outbreaks of zoonotic diseases, which can eventually threaten human health. Reducing safety risks, saving production costs, adapting to mass vaccination, and improving immunogenicity are important that must be considered in animal vaccines. Nanotechnology in vaccine development provides unique advantages in meeting these challenges, both at in vitro preparation and in vivo immune response levels. In terms of in vitro vaccine formulation, nanoparticles offer the possibility to provide multiple antigen display sites, maintain antigen conformation, and improve vaccine stability, which facilitates the development of vaccines with enhanced immunogenicity and thermal stability. In terms of in vivo vaccine‐induced immunity, nanoparticles show superior immunostimulatory activity which facilitates multiple immune response processes, including antigen delivery, cellular uptake, antigen presentation, and lymphocyte activation, thus markedly augmenting vaccine‐mediated immune responses. Herein, the application of nanotechnology to vaccine development and the characteristics of animal vaccines are reviewed, aiming to provide general guidelines for the design of future vaccines against animal infectious diseases and promote harmonious coexistence of humans and animals.

The rise of antibiotic resistance has caused the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections to be less effective. Therefore, researchers turn to nanomedicine for novel and effective antibacterial therapeutics. The effort resulted in the firstgeneration antibacterial nanoparticles featuring the ability to improve drug tolerability, circulation half-life, and efficacy. Toward developing the nextgeneration antibacterial nanoparticles, researchers have integrated design elements that emphasize physical, broad-spectrum, biomimetic, and antivirulence mechanisms. This review highlights four emerging antibacterial nanoparticle designs: inorganic antibacterial nanoparticles, responsive antibacterial nanocarriers, virulence nanoscavengers, and antivirulence nanovaccines. Examples in each design category are selected and reviewed, and their structurefunction relationships are discussed. These emerging designs open the door to nontraditional antibacterial nanomedicines that rely on mechano-bactericidal, function-driven, nature-inspired, or virulence-targeting mechanisms to overcome antibiotic resistance for more effective antibacterial therapy.
