Objective: to evaluate the prevalence of halitosis and associated factors in institutionalized elderly persons. Methods: a sectional study was performed with 268 elderly persons from 11 long-term care institutions in Natal in the northeast of Brazil. Data collection included an oral epidemiologic examination and questions about self-perception of oral health, as well as a consultation of medical records and the application of a questionnaire to the directors of the institutions. Halitosis was measured using the organoleptic test. The independent variables were oral, sociodemographic, institutional, general health and functional conditions. Bivariate analysis was performed using the Pearson chi-square test and Fisher's exact test, and the magnitude of effect was verified by the prevalence ratio for the independent variables in relation to the outcome, with a 95% confidence level. Results: the prevalence of halitosis was 26.1%, which was exhaled by the mouth in 98.57% of cases and by the nose in 10% of cases. Prevalence was 43% higher among nonwhite individuals ( p=0.006); 65% higher among those living in non-profit institutions ( p=0.039); 52% higher in elderly persons with oriented cognitive status ( p=0.047); 41% higher in elderly persons with root caries ( p=0.029); 62% higher in those who did not use dentures ( p=0.046); 57% lower in edentulous persons ( p<0.001); and 73% higher in elderly individuals with tongue biofilm ( p=0.001). Conclusion: The occurrence of halitosis in institutionalized elderly persons was similar to other studies, but there was an expressive number of extrabuccal cases and an association with oral health problems, as well as sociodemographic, institutional and functional factors.

Purpose Nursing home residents experience many problems that may influence their quality of life, in example of cognitive, mental, nutritional and physical disabilities. Concerning about elders’ wellbeing may help them living with dignity. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) of institutionalized elderly in a capital city of Brazilian Northeast.Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 193 institutionalized elderly living in the metropolitan region of João Pessoa (Brazil). A theoretical-conceptual model was build to guide the multiple regression analysis. The following variables were tested regarding their association with the residents’ HRQoL: 1) socio-demographic characteristics; 2) data associated with general health (Performance of daily-living activities, Frailty status, Cognitive status, Nutritional status, Self-perception of oral health and Depression status). Multiple linear and logistic regressions analyses were performed in order to assess the impact of each independent variable on HRQoL, considering a significance level of 5%.Results The mean ± SD and the median of HRQoL among institutionalized elderly people were 62.69 ± 15.24 and 62, respectively. Elderly were mostly (72.02%) female, being those with 80 years and over the more frequent (54.92%). Dependence on daily activities (OR=2.06, 95%CI=1.32-3.23), frailty (OR=1.68, 95%CI=1.15-2.45) and depression (OR=2.22, 95%CI=1.51-3.27) were statistically associated with poor HRQoL (p<0.05).Conclusions Dependent, frail and depressed institutionalized elderly presented a greater chance to have a worse HRQoL. It is necessary to plan and implement actions that would reduce the factors associated with the low quality of life of institutionalized elderly.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the perceptions of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, for the perceptions and possible adverse effects after using toothpaste based on Brazilian Red Propolis (BRP). Materials and Methods: This is a longitudinal clinical study. 40 participants used a toothpaste BRP three times a day for a total of four weeks. After 4 weeks, the end of the study, participants completed a questionnaire with a scale ranging from 0 to 10 for parameters such as taste, nausea, cleanliness, ease, irritation, odor and sense of taste change. Results: The taste, cleaning ability, ease and odor had high scores. There were no reports as to the possible adverse events such as irritation and change in taste. One participant reported the occurrence of nausea after brushing, indicating score 1. Conclusion: The use for 4 weeks of the BRP toothpaste did not cause adverse effects and had a good acceptance by the users.
