Oral health behaviours of parents and young children in a practice‐based caries prevention trial in Northern Ireland

Abstract: Toothbrushing was widely adopted from a young age, but between-meal sugar consumption was highly prevalent. The results suggest that effective family-level and population-level interventions are needed to reduce sugar consumption if substantial improvements in caries prevention are to be achieved.

“…Some authors state that triangulation assumes that the data from different research methods are comparable. In particular, each data set being of equal weight in the research inquiry [43][44][45][46]. In light of these concerns and recommendations [44,47], we have acknowledged this, and taken the following steps: The data of dental team members and parents were analysed separately, then, the similarities between the interviews and self-reported diaries were identified.…”

“…7 In this study, the parallel qualitative study added real value and helped the researchers to understand the factors that sustained and/or moderated the effects of the complex intervention in NHS practices. 8 It also helped them to provide a meaningful interpretation of the results of the trial for dental policymakers. If we are to increase the value of information that trials provide, we need to ensure that the incorporation of qualitative methods undertaken in parallel, forms part of a gold standard, with the registered trial protocol specifying how and in what way qualitative methods will contribute to understanding contextual knowledge and how the 'system' operates.…”

“…In a national survey of Taiwan in 2011, the prevalence of caries in 5-year-old children was more than 79.3%, which is higher than that of many other countries [ 1 ]. Early childhood is a critical stage for the prevention of caries [ 2 ]. The most valid predictive factor for experiencing caries in the permanent dentition is experiencing caries in the primary dentition [ 3 ].…”
