Background Choke (oesophageal obstruction) is an important oesophageal disorder in large domestic animals. Published studies on choke in the dromedary camel ( Camelus dromedarius ) are few in number and deal with small number of cases. Methods Sixty‐four camels with choke were presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, King Faisal University. History, breed, age, sex, duration of obstruction and clinical signs were recorded. The diagnosis was established using examination with a stomach tube, oesophageal radiography and endoscopy. Choke was managed either by using alligator forceps guided endoscope or by cervical oesophagotomy. Results Choke was recorded in camels less than 1 year old (84.38%) more than camels more than 1 year of age (15.62%) and complete obstruction more than partial. Most cases had obstruction involving the cervical oesophagus (96.87%). In the majority of obstructive masses, there were pieces of fabric (48.44%) and plastic bags (35.94%). Most obstructive masses were slightly radio‐opaque (62.5%). Surgical and non‐surgical managements were effective (91.3% and 94.44%, respectively) in resolving the choke. Conclusions Choke was most likely in animals less than 1 year of age with complete obstruction of the cervical oesophagus. Surgical and non‐surgical methods were effective in resolving the choke in the dromedary camels. It was not practical to use forceps extraction in all adult camels due to the limited length of the alligator forceps.

Latar Belakang: Penyakit ORF disebut juga dengan Contagious Ecthyma (CE), Contagious Pustular Dermatitis (CPD), Sore Mouth disebabkan oleh virus dari genus Parapoxvirus menyerang kambing dan domba. Penyakit orf bersifat sangat mudah menular pada kambing dan domba, dan bersifat zoonosis. Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas penggunaan kunyit dan Kandistatin® untuk pengobatan penyakit ORF di BBPTU-HPT Baturaden. Metode: Metode yang digunakan meliputi pencatatan identitas ternak, anamnesa, pemeriksaan klinis, diagnosa dan pengobatan. Pengobatan yang digunakan yaitu parutan kunyit yang dicampur dengan minyak sayur serta Kandistatin®. Hasil: Berdasarkan hasil anamnesa, pemeriksaan fisik, dan gejala klinis Kambing Saanen pada kandang G di Balai Besar Pembibitan Ternak Unggul dan Hijauan Pakan Ternak (BBPTU-HPT) Baturraden terdapat 3 ekor kambing yang terinfeksi penyakit ORF dengan nomor eartag 1861, 1985, dan 1986. Kambing Saanen tersebut berusia + 4 bulan. Kambing Saanen yang mengalami infeksi ORF diberi penanganan dengan menggunakan parutan kunyit yang dicampur dengan minyak sayur yang dibubuhkan dibibir kambing serta diberi Kandistatin® 1 ml sehari 2 kali selama 7 hari menunjukkan proses kesembuhan pada hari ketiga dan hari ketujuh dari hasil pemeriksaan menunjukkan kesembuhan. Kesimpulan: Penggunaan kunyit yang dicampurkan dengan minyak sayur serta pemberian Kandistatin® dapat digunakan untuk penanganan infeksi penyakit ORF.

Contagious ecthyma (CE) is one of the most widespread viral diseases; primarily affect goat and sheep but also reported from human, reindeer, musk ox, dog, cat, red squirrel etc. The disease is caused by contagious ecthyma virus (CEV) and he virus is circulating in Bangladesh. Present study was aimed at isolation, identification and molecular characterization of the CEV circulating in Bangladesh. A total of 13 samples (scab materials; 11 from goat and 2 from sheep) were collected from three different farms of Sylhet and Dhaka divisions followed by processing for virus detection by PCR and isolation in Vero cell. Four different sets of primers were used targeting four different genes of CEV. Of these samples, 10 (8 from goat and 2 from sheep) were found positive by PCR. From these positive samples three viruses were isolated. Sequencing of different genes of several CEV isolates has been done directly from PCR product using automated DNA sequencer 3010 Genetic Analyzer available at the National Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza (NRL-AI), Bangladesh. Bangladeshi isolates were found to have 95-99% identity to each other. When compared to viruses from other countries, high homology (92-96%) was observed to viruses from New Zealand and India, and phylogenetically clustered with them. This is the first report of molecular characterization, though partial, of CEV in Bangladesh.
