Oral Elastofibromatous Lesions: A Review and Case Series

Abstract: Elastofibromas of the oral cavity are rare, with only 5 cases reported. In this paper, we present a series of five new cases of oral elastofibromatous lesions, occurring in 4 males and 1 female, with ages ranging from 33 to 76 years. The clinical differential diagnosis includes fibroepithelial polyp or fibroma, among other connective tissue tumours. Elastofibromas probably develop as reactive lesions, for which surgical treatment is definitive.

“…Elastofibroma and elastofibromatous lesion of the oral cavity are tumor‐like lesions composed of elastic and fibrous connective tissue, which may represent a reactive process associated with friction irritation or trauma . Several cases of oral elastofibroma and oral elastofibromatous lesion have been published.…”

Several cases of oral elastofibroma and oral elastofibromatous lesion have been published. The differential diagnosis for these oral lesions included localized fibrous hyperplasia, irritation or traumatic fibroma, and fibroepithelial polyp, as well as leukoplakia .…”

“…Furthermore, several cases presenting elastofibromatous changes in the oral mucosa have been reported in recent years (9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14). As mentioned above, elastic fibers are also distributed around the vascular wall in the oral mucosal tissues and are speculated to be involved in the pathogenesis of OFH.…”
