Gut microorganisms can profoundly influence brain function in the host and their behavior. Since altered brain functional connectivity (FC) has been implicated in various cerebrovascular disorders, including cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, we hypothesized that gut microbiota in mice with cerebral I/R injury would affect brain FC when transplanted into germ-free mice. Metagenomic analysis of germ-free male C57BL/6J mice colonized with microbiota from mice with and without cerebral I/R injury showed a clear distinction in microbiota composition between mice colonized with control and I/R microbiota. The I/R microbiota-colonized mice showed decreased FC in the cingulate cortex, hippocampus, and thalamus, and exhibited increased anxiety as well as diminished spatial learning and memory and short-term object recognition memory. I/R microbiota-colonized mice also had significantly reduced dendritic spine density and synaptic protein levels and exhibited increased hippocampal inflammation. These results indicate that gut microbiota components from mice with cerebral I/R injury can alter animal behavior, brain functional connectivity, hippocampal neuronal plasticity, and neuroinflammation. Moreover, they increase our understanding of the mechanisms through which the gut microbiome contributes to the pathobiology of cerebrovascular diseases.

O objetivo do presente estudo é relatar um caso de infecção odontogênica grave em paciente geriátrico, abordando os aspectos clínicos e abordagem cirúrgica. Relato do Caso: Paciente do sexo masculino, 85 anos, com edema em submandibular direito, oral direito, submentual e dor intensa relacionada ao dente 46, que estava clinicamente comprometido por cárie em região vestibular. A antibioticoterapia com clindamicina e o procedimento cirúrgico foram realizados sob anestesia geral com exodontia 46 e drenagem dos espaços faciais submandibular, submentual e bucal. No pós-operatório imediato, o paciente evoluiu com acidente vascular cerebral e foi encaminhado à unidade de terapia intensiva (UTI), onde permaneceu por 7 dias. Depois disso, ele se recuperou bem e teve alta hospitalar no décimo dia após a cirurgia. O paciente encontra-se em acompanhamento pós-operatório de seis meses, sem sinais de complicações ou sequelas decorrentes do tratamento realizado. Conclusão: O tratamento das infecções odontogênicas em pacientes idosos deve ser realizado com grande cautela, principalmente naqueles com comprometimento sistêmico que pode desencadear complicações trans ou pós-operatórias. Além disso, é essencial o conhecimento adequado da anatomia, farmacologia e abordagem cirúrgica do dentista.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is the third leading cause of cardiovascular death in the world. Important risk factors of thrombosis include bed restraint, surgery, major trauma, long journeys, inflammation, pregnancy, and oral contraceptives, previous venous thromboembolism, cancer, and bacterial infections. Sepsis increases the risk of blood clot formation 2-20 times. In this review, we discussed various mechanisms related to the role of bacteria in venous thrombosis also taking into consideration the role of the human microbiome. Many known bacteria, such as Helicobacter pylori, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli, causing infections may increase the risk of thrombotic complications through platelet activation or may lead to an inflammatory reaction involving the fibrinolytic system. Additionally, the bacteria participate in the production of factors causing or increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. An example can be trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) but also uremic toxins (indoxyl sulfate), short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) phytoestrogens, and bile acids. Finally, we presented the involvement of many bacteria in the development of venous thromboembolism and other cardiovascular diseases.
