Oral and salivary changes in patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD): a two year follow-up study

Abstract: DMFT, dental plaque, gingival bleeding and periodontal indices did not change remarkably after two years, comparing dialysis and renal transplant patients. Renal transplantation enhances salivary flow and decreases symptoms of xerostomia and thirst, and hence enhances the potential to improve the quality of life of affected individuals.

“…If the flow of saliva diminishes considerably, allow populations of bacteria to build up in the mouth (16,17). It is known that diabetic patients have lower salivary flow rates (18). Decrease in the salivary flow of diabetic patients probably related to systemic dehydration (polyuria), medication (diuretics) and/or membranopathy of the ductus (10).…”

“…This is attributed to the antibacterial effect of increased pH as a result of urea hydrolization by saliva, which has a protective function against caries. And in a study published by Bots et al there is no significant difference in decayed tooth among CKD patients (25) . In the present study, oral candidiasis was found to be present in 30% of patients.…”
