“…Meanwhile, previous studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of two quercetin glycosides, rutin and quercitrin, in experimental models of rat colitis [11,12], which have also been demonstrated in the present study for quercitrin.…”

“…It is important to note that when the glycosylated forms of quercetin are assayed, there is usually a loss of activity in these effects in comparison with those obtained with the aglycone, due to the presence of the sugar moiety in the flavonoid structure [10]. On the contrary, both glycosides, quercitrin and rutoside, have shown to exert intestinal anti-inflammatory effects in experimental models of rat colitis [11,12], whereas no clear effects have been demonstrated for the aglycone form (unpublished results). The aim of this study was to clarify this controversy.…”

“…As expected, colonic instillation of TNBS/ethanol triggered an intense inflammatory response that was restricted to the distal segment of the large bowel and characterized by extensive hemorrhage and bowel wall thickening of most of the distal colon [4][5][6][7]. The median damage score was 9(8-10) (p < 0.05 vs. control group).…”

“…We have previously found that quercitrin and rutin exert a beneficial effect in experimental colonic inflammation [4][5][6]. Oral administration of either flavonoid 2 h prior to trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) administration and daily thereafter reduces neutrophil infiltration, counteracts glutathione depletion and protects the mucosa from ulceration.…”

“…They are expected to be candidates for alternative medicine, especially if they have immunomodulatory effects on allergies or inflammation. Rutin has already been reported to ameliorate experimental colitis in rats [4] and mice [17] through attenuation of proinflammatory cytokine gene expression. Some flavonoids, such as quercetin, kaempferol, fisetin and rutin, have been identified to inhibit histamine release from human basophils and rat mast cells [7,22].…”
