Optimizing Piezoelectric Cantilever Design for Electronic Nose Applications

Abstract: This work demonstrates a method to optimize materials and dimensions of piezoelectric cantilevers for electronic nose applications via finite element analysis simulations. Here we studied the optimum piezoelectric cantilever configuration for detection of cadaverine, a biomarker for meat ageing, to develop a potential electronic nose for the meat industry. The optimized cantilevers were fabricated, characterized, interfaced using custom-made electronics, and tested by approaching meat pieces. The results show … Show more

“…A layer of piezoelectric Aluminum Nitride (AlN) is sputtered on the cantilevers and contacted by electrodes deposited via electron beam evaporation. The cantilever is wire-bonded on a printed circuit board and interfaced with an impedance analyzer electronic circuit on a hand-held device designed for cadaverine detection and meat freshness evaluation, as described in [ 4 ].…”

“…Due to the flexibility of adapting the functionalized layer to the target gas, there are unending possibilities for application of these sensors into a wide range of fields. We have previously studied its application for cadaverine (meat freshness biomarker) sensing and demonstrated the application of micro-cantilever sensors for this use [4][5][6][7][8].…”

“…Another sensitive technique for gas sensing with perspectives for miniaturization and portable gas sensing solutions consists of piezoelectric resonators, including cantilevers, membranes and quartz crystals. Demonstrations of portable gas sensing solutions for selected targets have been demonstrated [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24], and selectivity can be achieved by applying a selective binder to the surface of the piezoelectric resonator. When the target molecules bind to the sensor surface, changes in mass can be measured as changes in the resonance frequency/impedance of the sensor.…”

“…Other types of gravimetric sensor systems based on film bulk acoustic resonator [94][95][96], cantilevers [97][98][99][100][101], capacitive micro-machined ultrasonic transducer [102,103] have also been explored and optimized for the detection of VOCs. The following reviews [34,42,43,104] provide more details about these sensors and bring together different research articles that focus on the development of this technique.…”
