Optimized Active Layer Morphologies via Ternary Copolymerization of Polymer Donors for 17.6 % Efficiency Organic Solar Cells with Enhanced Fill Factor

Abstract: Regulating molecular structure to optimize the active layer morphology is of considerable significance for improving the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, we demonstrated a simple ternary copolymerization approach to develop a terpolymer donor PM6‐Tz20 by incorporating the 5,5′‐dithienyl‐2,2′‐bithiazole (DTBTz, 20 mol%) unit into the backbone of PM6 (PM6‐Tz00). This method can effectively tailor the molecular orientation and aggregation of the polymer, and then optimiz… Show more

“…Then to reveal the mechanism of interaction between PDINO and BCF, the electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry (MS), 19 F nuclear magnetic resonance ( 19 F-NMR), UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were conducted to analyze the PDINO-BCF mixture.…”

“…These results indicated that PDINO easily formed complexes with BCF-H 2 O/methanol complex, and the interaction between PDINO and BCF-H 2 O/methanol was relatively strong so that they generated stable air ions detectable by MS detectors. 19 F NMR spectra of BCF in PDINO: BCF mixed methanol-D4 solution showed new sets of F atoms, and each set included three chemical shifts of F on ortho-, meta-, para-sites on the benzene rings. B and F sites on the BCF are possible sites to interact with PDINO.…”

“…an electron donor and an electron acceptor (bulk-heterojunction, BHJ) for light harvesting, the latter of which is often realized using fullerene derivatives ( Sariciftci et al, 1992 ; Liu et al, 2014 ; Zhao et al, 2016 ; Rasool et al, 2019 ). Although recent high performance organic solar cells with power conversion efficiencies of up to 17% employed non-fullerene acceptors ( Cui et al, 2020 ; Guo et al, 2020 ; Liu et al, 2020 ), fullerene derivatives are still regularly used, e.g., on industrial scale or as a third component in ternary semiconductor mixtures( Pan et al, 2019 ; Chen et al, 2021 ). The supramolecular order of organic solar cells is critical for charge carrier separation and transport ( Gurney et al, 2019 ; Zhao et al, 2020 ).…”
