Topology optimization lies at the heart of many design tasks in mechanical engineering. For those sheet metal products that consist of a bundle of separate channels (such as conduits) we formulate the design task as a linear mixed-integer optimization problem. The design goal is to find a topology where each channel has a given cross section area, using a minimum amount of sheet metal. In addition to a light-weight design, stiffness should also be taken into account. The entire approach is demonstrated in the design of a conduit with five separate channels.

Kurzfassung Unter dem Begriff des Design for Manufacture werden eine Vielzahl an Produktentwicklungsansätzen zusammengefasst, die den Entwickler vor allem im Hinblick auf das Sicherstellen der Herstellbarkeit technischer Produkte unterstützen. Es mangelt jedoch an Ansätzen, die die noch ungenutzten Möglichkeiten einer Fertigungstechnologiezur Realisierung oder Verbesserung des technischen Produkts aufzeigen. Diese ungenutzten Möglichkeiten können der Ausgangspunkt für neuartige fertigungsintegrierende Produktlösungen sein, die sich z. B. durch eine verbesserte Funktionserfüllung, einen erhöhten Leichtbaugrad oder auch eine erhöhte Lebensdauer auszeichnen. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wird der Grundstock für die Systematisierung einer fertigungsintegrierenden Produktentwicklung gelegt, mittels der die noch ungenutzten Möglichkeiten einer betrachteten Fertigungstechnologie systematisch erschlossen werden können. A new technique for forming sheet metal makes it possible to construct branched sheet metal products out of one piece of sheet metal. Since the number of potential ways to produce one and the same component increases exponentially with every additional branch, appropriate tools for handling the large number of possibilities are necessary. In this paper we give a Mixed Integer Program that models the different ways of producing branched profiles and show how to incorporate manufacturing constraints into the model.
