Optimization of microwave assisted extraction of essential oils from Iranian Rosmarinus officinalis L. using RSM

Abstract: In this study, the efficiencies of conventional hydro-distillation and novel microwave hydro-distillation methods in extraction of essential oil from leaves have been compared. In order to attain the best yield and also highest quality of the essential oil in the microwave assisted method, the optimal values of operating parameters such as extraction time, microwave irradiation power and water volume to plant mass ratio were investigated using central composite design under response surface methodology. Optima… Show more

“…Several methods of extraction are being employed in the recovery of oil from plant samples, which include conventional and modern methods. The use of conventional methods such as Soxhlet, hydro-distillation, maceration, soaking, and others generally limit the production capacity of oil, degradation of volatile chemical compounds resulting from thermal effects during the long duration of extraction process (Akhbari et al 2018). Moreover, conventional methods have shown low extraction yields and toxic solvent residues (Alara et al 2018d;Raut et al 2015).…”

“…A modified technique to separate essential oil from the fruit of A. fruticosa is developed using microwave-assisted hydrodistillation concatenated liquid-liquid extraction (MHD-LLE) (Chen et al 2017). Microwave assisted hydro-distillation method provides important advantages over conventional method such as: accelerated extraction time, reduced energy consumption, and cleaner production (Akhbari. et al 2018).…”
