Optimization of mechanical properties of PP/EPDM/ clay nanocomposite fabricated by friction stir processing with response surface methodology and neural networks

Abstract: In this article, effects of friction stir processing parameters such as tool rotational speed, traverse speed, shoulder temperature, and number of passes on tensile modulus and impact strength of polypropylene/ ethylene-propylene diene monomer/clay nanocomposite has been investigated. The Box-Behnken design with four factors at three levels was used for design of experiments. The response surface methodology was employed to develop models capable of predicting the effect of input variable on responses. A multi… Show more

“…One of the great advantages of RSM is the reduction of the total required numbers of experiments for a system in which the mutual interactions of variables are being analyzed . This method has been widely applied to optimize several responses in the area of polymer composite studies in which there are different material or procedural input parameters contributing to responses …”

“…In addition, it is difficult to determine the optimum combination of parameters to predict the improved mechanical properties. To solve this problem, design of experiment (DOE) method was used [38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46].…”

“…These plots can be useful for checking the capability of a model to fit the data set [2,36]. The points located on the normal probability plots of the residuals should form a straight line if the model is sufficient [37]. All the figures indicate that the residuals form a straight line in agreement that the errors are normally distributed.…”
