The coagulation process has become a common treatment method in water and wastewater treatment but not in palm oil mill effluent (POME) treatment. POME is known to have a high level of COD and turbidity and prior studies showed that the modified coagulation process using bio-coagulant may be feasible to remove primarily the COD and turbidity of the POME. In this study, an extract of Saccharum officinarum or bagasse is used as a source of bio-coagulant for the removal of COD and turbidity from POME at optimized coagulant dosage, pH, and contact time. The optimization was carried out via response surface analysis. This analysis stipulated that the application of Saccharum officinarum extract removed turbidity of more than 95%, COD of more than 65.0% with coagulation activity of 67.4% at optimum 50 mg/L coagulant dosage, pH 8, and slow mixing for 30 minutes. Henceforth, this study concludes the suitability of Saccharum officinarum as a bio-coagulant to primarily remove organic and solid pollutants during POME pre-treatment.

Peanut shells (PSs) generated from agricultural waste contain valuable compounds with bioactive properties such as anti-aging, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, making it desirable to recycle them as a sustainable resource. The aim of this study is to design an effective luteolin recovery process as the first step of an integrated biorefinery utilizing PSs as raw material. The major extraction variables and their ranges for luteolin recovery from PSs were determined (0–60 °C, 1–5 h, 0–100% MeOH concentration) and a predictive model was derived through a response surface methodology (RSM). Based on the predictive model, the equation determined for the maximal extraction of luteolin at 1 h was as follows: y = –1.8475x + 159.57, and the significant range of variables was as follows: 33.8 °C ≤ temperature (x) ≤ 48.5 °C and 70.0% ≤ MeOH concentration (y) ≤ 97.5%, respectively. High antioxidant and elastase inhibitory activities of PS extracts were confirmed, and these results support their potential to be used as functional materials. In addition, 39.2% of the solid residue after extraction was carbohydrate, which has potential as a carbon source for fermentation. This study provides a useful direction on an integrated biorefinery approach for sustainable agricultural waste valorization.

The aim of this research was the study of the centrifugation effect on olive mill wastewater (OMW) treatment by coagulation-flocculation using the Ca(OH)2-pectin system. To separate the treated OMW from the residual sludge, two methods were used: gravity decantation and centrifugation. Efficiency of the treatment was evaluated following the evolution of the OMW treated volumes and the reduction rates of dry matter (DM) and phenolic compounds (PC) and other parameters related to residual toxicity. Compared to gravity decantation, centrifugal separation significantly enhances the treatment of the OMW studied. Additionally, this separation method reduces considerably the treatment duration compared to gravity decantation i.e. 10 minutes instead of 4 hours. The lime-pectin system improved OMW purification. Optimal doses of lime and pectin were respectively 10 g/l and 0.2 g/l. Under these conditions, centrifugal separation allowed to obtain a volume of treated OMW about 78.2% of the raw effluent volume and reduced the rates of DM by 38 % and of PC by 79%. The COD was also reduced by 60.0%. These results show that the resulting sludge may be used for production of fertilizers or land augmentation, thus avoiding costly disposal.
