Optimization Design of a Double-Channel Pump by Means of Orthogonal Test, CFD, and Experimental Analysis

Abstract: A new approach to optimizing a double-channel pump was presented, based on combined use of orthogonal test, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and experimental analysis. First, a preliminary pump was designed according to design specifications, implementing the traditional design method. Later, a standard L 9 (3 4 ) orthogonal table including 9 representative design schemes was implemented to find the best parameter combination for the impeller of the pump. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations accompanie… Show more

“…Orthogonal optimization was performed along with FEM analysis for the pumping unit, and the results showed that Taguchi's method was an efficient and effective approach. Zhao et al 20 proposed a novel approach to optimize a doublechannel pump based on the combined use of orthogonal testing and CFD. An orthogonal table was implemented to obtain the optimized design, and CFD analyses and experiments were conducted to evaluate the optimized design.…”

“…According to the orthogonal method, the parameters are arranged to meet the principle of orthogonality, and hence the number of test cases can be reduced to achieve efficient optimization. Many investigations [20][21][22][23][24] have validated the reliability of the orthogonal method on the optimization of hydraulic machinery.…”

“…Numerical simulations can be used to investigate aspects of the mechanism that are not amenable to experiment. Some researchers used CFD and experimental analysis to present a new approach about optimizing a double-channel pump [21]. The CFD was adopted to analysis and design optimization of jet pumps [22].…”
