Abstract-In robot design, how to allocate tolerances for parts in manufacturing and assembling of robot is very important because this directly affects product quality and manufacturing cost. This paper introduces a technique using the Generalized Reduced Gradient algorithm optimization to allocate tolerances into robot parts. This method consists of three steps. First, based on the particular structure of robot, various methods are considered before the best method suitable for modeling the associated equation is chosen. Then, a mathematical model for tolerance allocation is formulated and transferred into the non-linear multi-variable optimization problem. Finally, this optimization problem is solved by using the Generalized Reduced Gradient algorithm. Two examples are used to verify the feasibility of the proposed method; the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method in producing the tolerance allocations is also illustrated via calculation and simulation results.

Extended AbstractMultiple spot-welding robots are used to improve productivity in automobile industry. A work cell considered in this paper consists of a number of robots working simultaneously for spot-welding in auto manufacturing process. Since the number of welding spots on a single car is very large, the sequence of tasks by the multiple-robots significantly affect the total tact time. The paths and sequences of the robots usually are generated using offline teaching method. This method highly depends not only on the intuition of human operator but also may cause inefficient productivity because of the nature of the cluttered environment with high degrees of freedom robots.In this paper, the evolutionary algorithm is employed to allocate tasks to each robot and optimize the sequence of operations by the multiple robots. The evolutionary algorithm has been used for optimization problems with large and complex search spaces due to their ability of finding a near optimal solution [1]. In this paper, an optimization problem with multiple object function is formulated and a corresponding scheme is developed for coding with the evolutionary algorithm. Two types of chromosomes are employed for scheduling the spot-welding system using multi-objective genetic algorithm [2]. The first part of each chromosome represents a permutation of the n welding spots and the second part of the chromosome represents the id of the assigned robots.Creation of the offspring generations is performed by an operator which selects a chromosome by proportional roulette-wheel selection using the following fitness function. P(i)=F(i)/ΣF(j)( 1) where P(i) represents the value of fitness of an i-th individual. The distance from the spot point to the end effector of the robot is used to select the mutation [3]. The mutation operator is used for the first part of the chromosome. The crossover operator is recombining the chromosome after reproduction of a selected identity. The one-point crossover is used [5] for operation on the second part of the chromosome.The fitness function for one chromosome reflects how well the individual is adapted to the environment. The fitness function considered in this high-density robotic work cell is composed of three parts representing multiple objetives;The first objective function is included to reduce the total distance travelled by the robots. The second one is included to reflect the each welding time and the third one is calculating the distance between robots and welding points. Reducing the fitness function will lead to minimizing the total task time and thus improve productivity.The proposed algorithm is applied to a system of 6 spot-welding robots with 338 welding spots. The simulation results show optimized load distribution and sequence of welding by each robot. RésuméLa densité des échanges commerciaux, ainsi que l'intensification de la concurrence qui a suivi, a conduit les entreprises à rationaliser leurs activités, particulièrement celles nécessitant des activités d'ordonnancement.La théorie de l'ordonnancement est une discipline bien établie de l'optimisation combinatoire. Son champ d'investigation concerne les problèmes d'allocation, dans le temps, d'un ensemble limité de ressources par un ensemble de tâches, afin d'optimiser un ou plusieurs critères donnés. Sa popularité vient du fait qu'une multitude de situations peut être ramenée à cette problématique d'ordonnancement. Cela est dû, en grande partie, à la richesse de l'interprétation que peuvent avoir les termes ressources et tâches. Nous pouvons citer, entre autres, des applications dans l'industrie (réalisation de produits sur des machines), la santé (confection d'horaires), l'informatique (exécution de processus).Dans ce mémoire de maîtrise, nous nous intéressons spécifiquement aux problèmes d'ordonnancement d'ateliers de production. Ainsi, notre étude porte sur l'ordonnancement de n tâches (jobs) sur m ressources (machines) dans un environnement de type job shop. Dans le modèle de job shop, chaque tâche doit passer sur l'ensemble des machines, à chaque fois pendant un temps connu à l'avance, et selon également un ordre donné. Le critère, que nous avons choisi pour évaluer la qualité d'une solution, est celui du makespan (la durée totale d'accomplissement des « tâches). Pour rester proche de la réalité industrielle, notre modèle incorpore un convoyeur chargé de transporter les tâches semi-finies d'une machine à une autre. Ce modèle peut être illustré par l'exemple d'une entreprise d'assemblage d'ordinateurs. Les machines assemblent divers éléments (cartes mères, disques durs, barrettes mémoires, etc) dans un boîtier. Un convoyeur déplace le boîtier entre les différentes machines. Suivant les spécifications de chaque ordinateur, chaque boîtier suit un chemin particulier. En effet, si un client souhaite acheter un boîtier contenant uniquement la carte-mère et l'alimentation, ce boîtier ne passera que sur deux machines.Nous nous sommes restreint au problème de job shop à deux machines et un seul convoyeur. Notons que nous supposons que les deux machines possèdent des espaces de stockage de taille illimitée pour recevoir les travaux semi-finis. Notre but était au départ de trouver un algorithme polynomial pour résoudre ce problème. Or, il s'est avéré que même avec ce modèle restreint et simplifié, le problème est NPdifficile. Pour le résoudre, nous nous sommes alors tournés vers l'approche heuristique. Néanmoins, nous avons pu trouver des cas particuliers où ce problème est résoluble en un temps polynomial.Notre démarche a été d'abord d'introduire brièvement les problèmes de la théorie de l'ordonnancement ainsi que quelques concepts de la NP-complétude, Ill avant d'aborder les différentes approches algorithmiques de résolution des problèmes d'ordonnancement.
