Optimal Packet Length for Free-Space Optical Communications with Average SNR Feedback Channel

Abstract: In this article, a method to enhance data rates of free-space optical (FSO) systems using packet length optimization is proposed. The average signal-to-noise ratio (ASNR) is measured at the receiver and sent back to the transmitter to optimize packet length. In addition, the length of packet is optimized to enhance the average throughput. We concluded that packet length can be reduced at low ASNR. However, packet length should be increased at higher values of received ASNR. For each ASNR, we also choose the op… Show more

“…A novel Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) is proposed for the lifetime maximization of WSN by the joint optimization of data packet size and transmission power level. The paper 34 by Alnwaimi et al proposed a packet length optimization method to enhance the data rate of free‐space optical (FSO). They used optimal modulation and coding schemes and the correct packet length to increase the throughput.…”

“…Hence, increasing the transmit power has a number of drawbacks. The packet size optimization was also proposed to enhance the data rate of the FSO, [21]. Though optimizing the packet size can guarantee the communication reliability, the overall rate cannot significantly increase because the amount of payload sent when the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) is low is lower than the ordinary packet size.…”
