The use of Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination has grown considerably in response to water scarcity. Despite steady improvements in efficiency, RO desalination remains an energyintensive process. Numerous studies focussed on using mature Renewable Energy Sources (RES), such as wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) energy, to drive RO plants on a small scale. However, RES have not been used to drive large plants, except with a grid connection, due to the intermittency and fluctuation of such sources. Direct coupling of the RO plant to a RES requires variable-speed operation and/or modular operation to match the load to the available power. This review presents the state-of-the-art in wind and solar-PV powered RO to identify technical challenges and potential solutions regarding large-scale implementation. Recent studies using wind and solar-PV to drive RO are analysed while considering the plant configuration, operational strategy, control system and methods used to improve the plant adaptability to the RES. Technical challenges may include shortened membrane life and 2 reduced performance of energy recovery devices. Potential strategies for incorporating modular and variable-speed operation in commercial RO plants are presented. Control strategies are reviewed, including Model Predictive Control, Neural Networks and classical Proportional-Integral-Differential feedback control. Recommendations are made on future research necessary for operation of commercial RO plant operation from renewable energy.

This work investigates a small-scale reverse osmosis desalination system dedicated for off-grid communities lacking freshwater. This system, constituted of motor-pumps, desalination process and hydraulic network (pipes and valves), is powered by hybrid photovoltaic-wind turbine source. It exploits hydraulic storage in water tanks filled when renewable energy is available instead of electrochemical storage. Such specificity makes the power/freshwater supply a challenging issue for these communities. To maximize freshwater production of this autonomous system, a "systemic design approach" integrating couplings between architecture, sizing, and energy management is proposed. According to the specific system architecture and its component sizing, a specific quasi-static model-based energy management strategy (EMS) is developed. In this regard, the influence of the main component sizing on the system energy efficiency and the EMS performance is analyzed. This study proved the strongly coupling between power/water management and pump sizing. According to the iterative process of the systemic design approach, simulation results showed that the EMS objective is reached by increasing the brackish water storage tank capacity and improving the system energy efficiency. The latter is achieved by choosing the pumps-combination composed of three pumps having the lowest rated powers (0.37kW/0.37kW/1.5kW), but offering higher energy efficiency over other analyzed pumps-combinations.

Summary This paper investigates the performance of a battery‐less photovoltaic desalination system. Lead‐acid batteries have been removed from the system due to adverse environmental effects, a shorter lifespan, and to reduce the total cost. Due to the lack of a storage device, starting a high current load like an AC compressor leads to electrical instability of the system. The proposed solution for this problem includes using a combination of two high‐capacity electrolyte capacitors, one at the PV terminals and the other at the single‐phase inverter input terminals. Suitable resistive starters have also been sized and added to the circuit to limit the inrush current of capacitors at the energization moment. An analytical procedure has been introduced to design the optimal size of the capacitors and the starter resistors. The results of a 1.1 kW test system show that using two capacitors, 12 000 μf/ 350 Volts as C1 and 330 000 μf/ 50 Volts as C2, at the same time, can handle a starting current of 12 Amps for the starting period of 100 ms of the AC compressor. The maximum voltage drop on the capacitors will be 48 and 17%, which are in the accepted range, and no instability happens.
