Optimal microgrid planning for enhancing ancillary service provision

Abstract: Microgrids have presented themselves as an effective concept to guarantee a reliable, efficient and sustainable electricity delivery during the current transition era from passive to active distribution networks. Moreover, microgrids could offer effective ancillary services (AS) to the power utility, although this will not be possible before the traditional planning and operation methodologies are updated. Hence, a probabilistic multi-objective microgrid planning (POMMP) methodology is proposed in this paper t… Show more

“…In [82,83], the spinning and non-spinning reserves are the main objective function to be minimized. In [84], an algorithm is proposed to minimize the unmet load and consequently reduce the load shedding. Eventually, the cost of expected interruption and lost opportunity is considered a cost function in [85] to increase the system's reliability.…”

“…The islanded mode allows MGs to operate all/parts of their critical loads during a crisis such as power outages and storms, whereas the upstream grid is jeopardized in such situations (Shahsavari and Akbari, 2018). Hence, MGs have advantages such as more reliable and resilient service (Ortmeyer et al, 2016); congestion relief and T&D investment deferral through reduced peak loads (Jin, 2015); ancillary services as a result of co-optimization of the DERs' dispatch (CONTRERAS et al, 2019); and environmentally friendly operations owing to increased renewable energy integration enabled by electric/thermal storage capabilities (Abu-Elzait and Parkin, 2019).…”

“…Many intelligent optimization techniques are used to handle the multi-objective optimization dispatch (MOOD). Fireworks algorithm with gravitational search operator (MFAGSO) , MOPSO (Aghajani et al 2018) method, ant lion optimizer (ALO) algorithm (Hatata et al 2018), NSGA-II optimization method (Contreras et al 2019), strength pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA) (Yuan et al 2017) and so on.…”
