Optimal locations of terrestrial laser scanner for indoor mapping using genetic algorithm

Abstract: A terrestrial laser scanner emerges as a main mapping technology for the indoor 3D model by providing fast and accurate 3D data. However, the field process to acquire the indoor 3D data using a terrestrial laser scanner heavily relies on the expert's field experiences. In this paper, the new method consisting of determination of optimal terrestrial laser scanner locations for indoor mapping using a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to acquire indoor 3D data more efficiently. The proposed method using GA utili… Show more

“…Therefore, the proposed system is an efficient and accurate solution for indoor 3D mapping.surveying process requires skilled personnel and sufficient knowledge of the survey area to pick optimal stations, good network design for marker placement, etc. [5][6][7][8].Mobile measurement technology integrates positioning, attitude determination, and measurement, which realizes the measurement in motion, improves the degrees of freedom of the measurement platform, and greatly reduces the time and labor costs. A typical mobile measurement system (MMS) consists of laser scanners, optical cameras, the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and a high-grade inertial measurement unit (IMU) mounted on a vehicle.…”

“…Looking at the existing literature, it is evident that from large amount of publications, the viewpoint planning problem remains an open issue with a TLS applied to large and complex modelling projects (Mozaffar and Varshosaz, 2016). Among the publications, the most relevant studies are from Ahn and Wohn (2015), Blaer and Allen (2007), Biswas et al (2015), Jia and Lichti (2017), Kawashima et al (2014), Kim et al (2014), Mozaffar and Varshosaz (2016), Pito (1996 and1999), Soudarissanane and Lindenbergh (2011), Soudarissanane (2016), Wujanz and Neitzel (2016) and Zhang et al (2016). They are generally grouped into two strategies, which are briefly reviewed.…”
