Optimal intervention strategies for cholera outbreak by education and chlorination

Abstract: Abstract. This paper discusses the control of infectious diseases in the framework of optimal control approach. A case study on cholera control was studied by considering two control strategies, namely education and chlorination. We distinct the former control into one regarding person-to-person behaviour and another one concerning person-to-environment conduct. Model are divided into two interacted populations: human population which follows an SIR model and pathogen population. Pontryagin maximum principle w… Show more

“…During the COVID-19 pandemic, the science education sector has played an important role in collaboration with the health sector and other supporting fields (Bakhtiar, 2016;Barennes et al, 2010;Karlsen et al, 2015). Science education not only contributes to one's knowledge, but it also affects a person's general attitudes and practices toward infectious disease.…”

“…Therefore, to minimize the number of pathogens in the environment (including water sources and foods), it is essential to incorporate a rate u 2 ( t ) that caters for that case. Likewise, a success of education campaigns has been extensively reported by a number of scholars (e.g., [ 14 , 16 ]) in combating several diseases. In the current work, we also assume that public health education plays an important role in controlling shigellosis.…”

“…They used the optimal control theory to confirm the significant role played by control measures (education and treatment of water bodies) and the bacteria in the environment in the transmission dynamics as well as reduce the spread of cholera. Reference [ 14 ] studied cholera by incorporating two control strategies, namely, education and chlorination. Cost-effectiveness was also carried out, and it was noted that education was the most cost-effective strategy to curtail cholera.…”

“…Covid-19 pandemic has been giving impact on life aspects, including education. In this situation, the role and position of education is extremely crucial (Bakhtiar, 2016). There are many countries decided to shut down their schools and university for any regular teaching-learning activities (Contreras, 2020).…”
