In this study, fluidized-bed Fenton process (FBF) was used to degrade dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), one of the most widely used solvents. Oxidation by Fenton's reagent, Fe ?2 and H 2 O 2 , is one of the cheapest advanced oxidation processes due to the high availability of the reagents. FBF is a modified approach that reduces the large amount of iron oxide sludge formed in conventional Fenton process. The optimal treatment efficiencies by FBF with 2 h of reaction were 95.22 % of DMSO degradation and 34.38 % of COD removal at the conditions of 5 mM DMSO, 68.97 g/L SiO 2 carrier, pH initial 3.0, 5 mM Fe 2? , and 32.5 mM H 2 O 2 . The kinetic study was also done to investigate the two stages involved in the oxidation. The first stage fitted the zero reaction order with overall initial rate's apparent rate constant, k 1 , of -0.099. The second stage fitted the first order of DMSO degradation, with rate constant, k 2 , of -0.0005.

The physiological responses of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) exposure were investigated in rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. XZX 45) seedlings. The seedlings were hydroponically exposed to different concentrations of DMSO for 72 h. Results showed that a linear decrease in relative growth rate and water use efficiency was observed with rice seedlings with increasing DMSO concentrations. The estimation of cell death measured by Evans blue uptake also indicated DMSO-induced damage in root tissues. Negligible decrease in chlorophylls was noted, while significant reduction in carotenoids content was only observed at 13.54 mM DMSO. Although DMSO did not have any significant effect on protein content in roots, the protein content in shoots was significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner. Proline content in both plant tissues was positively affected by DMSO exposure, responding an inverted U-shaped curve with DMSO concentrations. Results also showed that DMSO-induced accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) was evident in roots rather than shoots. DMSO did not result in any significant changes in superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities as well as malondialdehyde content. Catalase (CAT) activity in both roots and shoots was quite sensitive to changes in DMSO treatments than other enzymes, suggesting that CAT may play central role in the detoxification of H 2 O 2 in rice seedlings under DMSO exposure. Results suggest that growth inhibition and cell death of rice seedlings caused by DMSO exposure were largely related to the accumulation of H 2 O 2 in plant tissues.

Acclimatized dimethyl sulfoxide-degrading sludge can possess the ability to convert DMSO to odourless compounds specifically by repeated batches in an air-lift bioreactor. Moreover, DMSO usually causes a low microbial biomass growth, unstable operation and malodorous compounds emission in biological treatment because of its characteristic for activated sludge. A main focus of DMSO degrading performance is conducted by original sludge without longterm acclimation using an airlift bioreactor in this study. The result indicates various organisms of sludge poisoned by DMSO still secrete inducible oxidoreductase to improve volatile organic sulphur compounds degradation using DMSO as a substrate in an air-lift bioreactor. Using this method, the oxidoreductase in the supernatant of working medium is able to remove DMSO concentration from 50 up to 1000 mg L -1 completely by fed batch mode due to LB medium cultures and enhances the microbial activity of activated sludge. An optimal alternative performance was developed; the rate of DMSO biodegradation can accomplish 34.72 mg-DMSO h -1 g -1 -dry sludge weight. The best result showed that 500 mg L -1 of DMSO could be completely removed with 120 h under repeated mode. Control of microbial activity in high loading of DMSO and carbon content in wastewater were important factors for biodegradation of DMSO.
