Due to the widespread deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) and the liberalization of electricity market, traditional distribution networks are undergoing a transition to active distribution systems (ADSs), and the traditional deterministic planning methods have become unsuitable under the high penetration of DERs. Aiming to develop appropriate models and methodologies for the planning of ADSs, the key features of ADS planning problem are analyzed from the different perspectives, such as the allocation of DGs and ESS, coupling of operation and planning, and high-level uncertainties. Based on these analyses, this comprehensive literature review summarizes the latest research and development associated with ADS planning. The planning models and methods proposed in these research works are analyzed and categorized from different perspectives including objectives, decision variables, constraint conditions, and solving algorithms. The key theoretical issues and challenges of ADS planning are extracted and discussed. Meanwhile, emphasis is also given to the suitable suggestions to deal with these abovementioned issues based on the available literature and comparisons between them. Finally, several important research prospects are recommended for further research in ADS planning field, such as planning with multiple micro-grids (MGs), collaborative planning between ADSs and information communication system (ICS), and planning from different perspectives of multi-stakeholders.

This paper describes the algorithm for optimal distribution network reconfiguration using the combination of a heuristic approach and genetic algorithms. Although similar approaches have been developed so far, they usually had issues with poor convergence rate and long computational time, and were often applicable only to the small scale distribution networks. Unlike these approaches, the algorithm described in this paper brings a number of uniqueness and improvements that allow its application to the distribution networks of real size with a high degree of topology complexity. The optimal distribution network reconfiguration is formulated for the two different objective functions: minimization of total power/energy losses and minimization of network loading index. In doing so, the algorithm maintains the radial structure of the distribution network through the entire process and assures the fulfilment of various physical and operational network constraints. With a few minor modifications in the heuristic part of the algorithm, it can be adapted to the problem of determining the distribution network optimal structure in order to equalize the network voltage profile. The proposed algorithm was applied to a variety of standard distribution network test cases, and the results show the high quality and accuracy of the proposed approach, together with a remarkably short execution time.

Transmission congestion management became a grievous issue with the increase of competitiveness in the power systems. Competitiveness arises due to restructuring of the utilities along with the penetration of auxiliary services. The present study depicts a multi objective technique for achieving the optimal capacities of distributed generators (DG) such as solar, wind and biomass in order to relieve congestion in the transmission lines. Objectives like transmission congestion, real power loss, voltages and investment costs are considered to improve the technical and economical performances of the network. Multi objective particle swarm optimization algorithm is utilized to achieve the optimal sizes of unity power factor DG units. The insisted methodology is practiced on IEEE-30 and IEEE-118 bus systems to check the practical feasibility. The results of the proposed approach are compared with the genetic algorithm for both single and multi-objective cases. Results revealed that the intimated method can aid independent system operator to remove the burden from lines in the contingency conditions in an optimal manner along with the improvement in voltages and a reduction in real power losses of the network.
