Optical subcarrier multiplexing transmission for base station with adaptive array antenna

Abstract: We propose utilizing a radio-over-fiber technique of optical subcarrier-multiplexing transmission for radio base stations (BSs) with adaptive array antennas. The proposed system can be constructed at low cost since only one optical transmitter and receiver is required for a center station and a BS. Moreover, relative phases among antenna branches are insensitive to equivalent length fluctuation of an optical fiber.Index Terms-Land mobile radio equipment, microwave antenna arrays, optical fiber communication, p… Show more

“…This can be accomplished with pilot tones plus phase locked loops (PLL) [28]. As all the LOs are orthogonal, the synchronization can be simplified using a single pilot tone plus PLLs [29,30], or, potentially, a single PLL plus an electrical comb. In the bench experiments presented in section IV, variable phase shifters were used in the LOs of the transmitter and the receiver to obtain maximum flexibility.…”

“…RoF technology using SCM was known to have the benefits of low-cost and good bandwidth utilization properties [4]. In our system, a RoF unit consisting of a SCM filter, a RF up/down converter, and a RF antenna is attached to the original ONU.…”

“…The problem of sending MIMO signals that have the same carrier frequency over a single optical wavelength directly is that they overlap in the frequency domain. The solution for this problem was proposed using WDM and subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) techniques [10,11]. These techniques are not cost-effective, since multiple optical sources and photodetectors are required.…”
