Optical Stability of High-translucency Resin-based Composites

Abstract: SUMMARY This study investigated the stability of the optical properties of high-translucent shades of dental resin-based composites. Four commercial materials (Filtek Z350 XT, Opallis, Amelogen Plus, and IPS Empress Direct) and 14 non-Vita shades were tested. Disc-shaped specimens for each resin-based composite-shade combination (n=6) were evaluated at T0 (baseline), T1 (after 30 days of storage in water), and T2 (after 30 days of storage each in water and a coffee solution). Color measurements … Show more

“…Neste estudo, os resultados de translucidez das resinas compostas avaliadas foram semelhantes. A translucidez é uma propriedade óptica que pode influenciar a obtenção da cor adequada e consequentemente na estética, uma vez que materiais muito translúcidos podem causar a visualização de uma tonalidade acinzentada da restauração em comparação aos dentes hígidos adjacentes 59,60 . Alterações na translucidez após a polimerização e envelhecimento também foram observadas anteriormente na literatura 61 .…”

“…The addition of the sugar and milk group was added as some studies showed a difference in staining potentials of coffee when sugar or milk was added. 56 The higher staining potential of the coffee can be contributed to the presence of yellow staining molecules with high affinity to polymer molecules. [82][83][84] For the tea, the staining could be due to the presence of tannic acid and stains.…”

“…45,[49][50][51][52][53] The use of Lucirin eliminated the amine group, thereby increasing color stability upon aging. 25,45,48,[54][55][56] IPS Empress Direct (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), a resin-based material, was introduced to the market. Utilizing the latest technology, the manufacturer of IPS composite added nano-fillers and the Lucirin TPO-initiator system to the compound to reduce the amount of CQ used, thereby reducing its yellowing effect.…”

“…In addition to the primary color attributes (hue, lightness, and chroma), there are other, more subtle properties that can have a considerable impact on the final result (translucency, opacity, fluorescence, with translucency being the most important) [23][24][25].…”

“…It has been shown that the color coordinates of composites with the same designation, originating from different brands can be different. Several authors have shown that the color and translucency depend on the manufacturers and the shade classification [18,25,[27][28][29][30]. To the best of our knowledge, no research has been done to analyze the color and translucency parameter of different consistencies of flowable giomers.…”
