Optical properties of erbium doped antimony based glasses: Promising visible and infrared amplifiers materials

Abstract: International audienceHighly stable glasses in the (70 − x)Sb2O3[BOND]20Na2O[BOND]10ZnO[BOND]xEr2O3 (x = 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 mol%) system have been prepared and investigated by UV-Vis-NIR absorption, near infrared photoluminescence and time-resolved spectroscopy. Judd-Ofelt study has been used to determine the intensity parameters (Ω2, Ω4, and Ω6), spontaneous emission probabilities, branching ratios, and radiative lifetimes (τR) related to the corresponding optical transitions of Er3+ ions. Details of the emis… Show more

“…As given in Table 3, the JO parameter values obtained for the present glass systems are comparable with the values reported for other Er 3+ doped glassy systems [26,[39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47]. The JO parameters obtained in the present work suggest that different concentrations of Er 3+ ion in ZnAlBiB glasses possess strong asymmetry and/or covalency of the RE ion sites.…”

“…Consequently, the incorporation of Bi 2 O 3 in the antimony glass may be advantageous for improving the local basicity of Er 3+ ions with decreasing number of non-bridging oxygen ions. The J-O treatment leads to very large values of Ω 6 for Er 3+ ions in these glasses in comparison to other oxide and antimony glasses previously reported [51]. The large Ω 6 is also correlated to the ionicity of Er-ligand bond in various glasses and its origin [31].…”

“…These three parameters are the key factors for laser application of rare earth ions in any host matrix. To our knowledge, there are few studies based on the application of J-O theory to Er-doped antimony glasses [13]; but there is much research on the erbium-doped glasses containing Sb 2 O 3 as second former in glass matrices such as antimony-borate [14,15], antimony-silicate [16] or antimony-phosphate [17].…”
