Optical isotope shifts and changes in nuclear charge radii of stable Ti isotopes

Abstract: Abstract. Isotope shifts and hyperfine structures in three optical transitions of TiI have been investigated by using laser induced resonance fluorescence in a collimated atomic beam. From the isotope shifts data, changes of the mean square charge radii of the stable titanium isotopes have been determined for the first time. Using a combined analysis with muonic atom data on root mean square nuclear charge radii, improved model independent (r2) 1/2 values for the odd-even Ti isotopes have been obtained.

“…As an experimental method we have applied Doppler-reduced laser spectroscopy on an atomic beam, the one of sufficient accuracy for that purpose. Our results concerning 1r2 AA , presented in this paper, agree with [1,5,7]. Our results for the hyperfine structure of the levels involved in the transitions investigated will be published elsewhere [8].…”

“…2. Additionally King plots of our results versus the optical IS measurements of other authors [5][6][7]14] have been constructed; the agreement is generally good, in some cases even very good. The values of the electronic factors F G and M1+1 G , obtained from King plots of individual transitions versus 1r2 AA , are listed in Table 5.…”

“…The interpretation is supported by previous Hartree-Fock calculations of both specific and field shifts in titanium (5,6). From these data and previous ones (1,7,8), it is now possible to get a more complete view of isotope shifts in titanium.…”

“…The data we use come from laser fluorescence spectroscopy (LFS, also known simply as laser-induced fluorescence, LIF; Gangrsky et al 1995). We prefer the data of Gangrsky et al over the less accurate work of Cruz et al (1994) and previous results from the same group (Anastassov et al 1994). Isotopic separations can be estimated for many of our our chosen Ti  lines using the LFS measurements of Nouri et al (2010).…”
