Optical isotope shifts in titanium I: new measurements

Abstract: The optical isotope shifts between Ti, Ti andTi have been measured for eight 3d 4s a F-3d 4s 4p y F lines of titanium by use of a Doppler-free experiment. By contrast with the positive shifts previously measured for 3d 4s a F-3d 4s 4p z D lines, these shifts are negative and reveal the presence of large negative specific mass shifts attributed to a d-p electron jump. The interpretation of the present measurements and of former ones is made by means of HartreeFock calculations.

“…This time we propose a similar study concerning Ti II in order to extend this kind of analysis to this third ion located in the same row of the periodic table. HFS and IS of atomic titanium have been largely and extensively studied during the last two decades [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] but only a few measurements and analyses have been carried out so far for Ti II [11][12][13][14]. The first highest resolution achieved experimentally for Ti II was by Gianfrani et al [11], who used laser polarization spectroscopy on a hollow cathode discharge.…”

“…It may be worthwhile to mention that the same program of acquisitio n and analysis was also used for the accurate measurement of optical isotope shifts in titanium atoms. Then, only a relativ e calibration of the wave-numbers was needed, the shifts being m easured with an uncertainty of 6 MHz (0,0002 cm ±1 ) [27].…”
