Optical component coupling using self-written waveguides

Abstract: Optical component coupling using self-written waveguides is one of the promising methods to improve the existing alignment control difficulties in optical component coupling. Using conventional UV curable resin as a waveguide material, waveguide spontaneously forms by UV light exposure from an edge of an optical fiber. When UV light is exposed from two faced optical fiber edges, self-written waveguide forms and connect the two optical fibers with decreasing its coupling loss between them. As one interesting fe… Show more

“…We have investigating more systematic study of the coupling effects of both-side exposure using MMFs with various gaps 8,9 . Two kinds of both side exposure coupling methods are so far tried; first, UV light is alternatively introduced from each MMF edge (alternative exposure) 8 ; second, the light is simultaneously introduced from both MMF edges (simultaneous exposure) 9 .…”

“…Such optical waveguides are called "self-written waveguides." Self-written waveguides were also constructed in photosensitive glass [46], and photorefractive crystals [47], and a wide range of work has been accomplished [48][49][50][51].…”
