Optical Beam Steering Using an NxN Phased Array with 2N Phase Shifters

Abstract: A novel NxN optical phased array (OPA) with 2N phase shifters is proposed that significantly reduces power consumption and enables OP As with compact element spacing. 2-D beam steering with an 8x8 OP A using the proposed scheme is demonstrated.

“…For instance, to address the interconnect density challenge, complex and costly electrical interconnect solutions such as through-silicon via (TSV) [14], monolithic platforms [15], or large-scale chip-to-chip interposers are investigated [16]. Alternatively, full wavefront control can be sacrificed with architectures that can only do simple beamforming to reduce the interconnect density challenges [15,17,18].…”

“…Integrated solid-state photonic beamformers (optical phased arrays or OPAs) have the potential to reduce the cost, size, and implementation complexity of many photonic systems compared to their bulk optics and MEMS counterparts [1,2]. These solid-state beamformers have been recently demonstrated for LiDAR [3,4], photonic beam steering [5][6][7], medical imaging [8], and remote sensing [9] applications. In particular, standard silicon photonics processes can further reduce the cost and increase the yield and reliability of such systems [6,[10][11][12].…”
