Optical band gap and photoluminescence studies of Eu3+-doped zinc silicate derived from waste rice husks

Abstract: In this study, investigation on photoluminescence and optical properties of europium doped zinc silicate (Zn2SiO4:Eu3+) glass ceramics derived from white rice husk ash as potential silica source have been done. Undoped and 3 wt. % of europium doped zinc silicate were prepared by solid state method and sintered at 600-1000 °C for 2 h. XRD analysis revealed the phase formation of amorphous, α or β-Zn2SiO4:Eu3+ phases of the glass and glass ceramic samples. FESEM results show the samples were irregular in shapes … Show more

“…In order to determine the size of the crystal, the type of crystal, and the surface morphology of the zinc silicate glass and glass-ceramics samples, the FESEM analysis was done. From our observations, at the lower temperatures of 27 • C and 700 • C there were no grain growth, showing a clear glassy surface that tallies with the XRD result where at 27 • C and 700 • C the sample was still in an amorphous phase [16]. Meanwhile, as the sintering temperature increased to 750 • C and 800 • C, the microstructure of the sample still did not show a regular shape (irregular) and started to aggregate among each other.…”

“…Several past studies have proven that silica can be extracted from various agricultural wastes, such as rice husk, rice straw, sugarcane bagasse, corn cob and palm ash [8,[11][12][13][15][16][17][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. However, information regarding its synthesis from coconut husk waste is limited.…”
