Optical Assessment and Expected Visual Quality of Four Extended Range of Vision Intraocular Lenses

Abstract: PURPOSE: To assess the optical performance of four extended range of vision (ERV) intraocular lenses (IOLs) and predict the visual quality of the average pseudophakic patient. METHODS: Four ERV IOLs (LuxSmart, Bausch & Lomb; Vivity, Alcon Laboratories, Inc; Tecnis Eyhance, Johnson & Johnson Vision; and Isopure, PhysIOL) were inserted in an on-bench model eye. Their performance was assessed using through-focus modulation transfer function (MTF)–b… Show more

“…The visual quality evaluated with the double-pass system OQAS showed similar MTF and SR values for both lenses, although the MTF cut-off frequency was higher than normal for both lenses, having an average value close to 30 c/deg, with the 4.0-mm pupil diameter set with the OQAS. These 'in-vivo' findings with the ISOPure lens are in line with those obtained by Alarcon et al 19 and Azor-Moron et al 20 on an optical bench.…”

“…After the full text evaluation, three clinical studies were excluded since the inclusion criteria was not accomplished, [11][12][13] and one mixed was maintained (partly excluded) since the criteria was accomplished in the laboratory study context but not in the clinical [14]. During the search update in the moment of data extraction, three papers were included, two not indexed in the databases and found through snowballing techniques, [15,16] and 1 new after search update [17]. Finally, 38 studies were included in the data extraction process (Fig.…”

“…With regard optical quality metrics, the depth of focus achieved for predicted visual acuity of 0.2 logMAR and the increase range in comparison to a standard monofocal was retrieved for 4 manuscripts (Table 1) [15,[18][19][20]. Three papers showed the influence of the IOL centration on the modulation transfer function (MTF) at 50 lp/mm (Table 2) [21][22][23].…”

“…19 We would anticipate that the slightly increased depth of focus that has been reported with this IOL depends on pupil constriction induced by accommodation. 20,21 Our visual tests were performed with a fixed pupil size of 4.5 mm. As such, the finding that the IOL with zero SA had better DCIVA at low contrast was anticipated.…”
