Opposite clear corneal incisions on the steep meridian in phacoemulsification

Abstract: Results indicate that on-axis OCCIs are a reliable and practical way of reducing preexisting corneal astigmatism. The change in SE was negligible and thus can be ignored during biometry.

“…Tadros et al (25) found that the astigmatic effect of superior, temporal, and oblique OCCI incisions showed no statistical difference, though a slightly higher SIA was detected in the case of superior incisions. In our study, the rate of induced astigmatism is independent of the location of the incision in the OCCI method.…”

“…3 OCCIs have an enhanced effect 3 and are self-sealing. WTR astigmatism induced by temporal CCI in cases with nil pre existing astigmatism is minimal 22 usually about 0.25-0.75 D hence only small superior CCI of 2.2 mm is sufficient to tackle it. The mean surgically induced astigmatism in patients with smaller incisions was significantly less than in patients with 3.0-mm incisions.…”

“…17,18 Performing an additional CCI opposite the first CCI to enhance the flattening effect has been reported. [19][20][21][22] This method is called paired opposite clear corneal incisions (OCCIs). We performed a comparative evaluation of surgically induced astigmatism between 3.2 mm OCCI and CCI in cataract patients.…”
