In several countries, organic or municipal solid wastes, such as cattle and buffalo manure, have become a serious political and environmental issue owing to organic waste incineration and garbage disposal. To overcome this problem, biogas production from manure, a green treatment that both contributes to the availability of sustainable energy and assists in reducing global warming, was considered. The current study was conducted on the generation of green electricity using cattle and buffalo manure in Pakistan. In 2021, Pakistan has generated 102.742-terawatt hour (TWh) of electricity collectively; biogas share in total production accounted for only 0.98%, which is approximately 1 TWh. Unfortunately, most of the electricity was generated from nonrenewable energy sources. One large animal produces 9–10 kg of manure per day. A system for manure collection can be developed; 30% of total manure produced every day by cattle and buffalo can be collected. Such a type of system is already used for the collection of poultry manure. Pakistan has been blessed with almost 42.4 million buffaloes and 51.5 million cattle. The annual collection of manure from cattle and buffalo at the rate of 30% will be 92.53 million tons. From this manure, approximately 4.63 billion m3 of biogas can be produced and 70% can be collected, which will be 3.24 billion m3. Thus, Pakistan has the potential of generating 19.79 TWh of electricity per day from cattle and buffalo manure. Biogas has the potential to generate over 20% of Pakistan’s total electricity. At the farm level, 100 cattle ranches with 60% collected manure can create roughly 57% of their total consumed electricity. Slurry, a byproduct of anaerobic digestion, can be used as a biofertilizer in fields. It is possible to use cattle manure to make biogas, which is “made by fermentation of organic waste in the absence of oxygen.” It aids in the reduction of fossil fuel dependency, solid waste management, and air pollution control by lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Biogas contributes to the three pillars of sustainable development: economic, environmental, and social development. Biogas contributes significantly to the SDGs and other aspects of sustainable development.

Multi-energy microgrids could result in more flexibility and increase reliability by interconnecting networks. Electricity and gas networks exhibit very different dynamic behaviours in response to a fault or failure. Gas networks have built-in energy storages that can continue to provide a reliable supply if gas inputs to the system are compromised. This study presents a novel reliability assessment method applied to multi-energy microgrids; the method combines an incidence matrix analysis that identifies the connectivity between sources and load points with a sequential Monte Carlo simulation and generation adequacy evaluation. A case study is conducted by using an electricity-gas microgrid. The electricity network is a multi-sourced grid, whereas the gas network is supplied by a biogas plant. The linepack (gas stored along the pipelines) is modelled to account for the slower gas dynamics. The proposed method is evaluated on a real-world electricity distribution network in Austria. The results indicate the reliability benefits of forming a multi-energy microgrid. INTRODUCTIONEnergy networks are being transformed into flexible, intelligent, and interconnected systems. Most of these changes are due to the advances in technology [1, 2], changes in energy policy, and economic factors, which have enabled the deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs).To further decarbonize energy systems, hydrogen can be used as a zero-carbon alternative to natural gas in energy networks [3]. This can be accomplished by employing power-togas (PtG) technologies [4] on the consumer side, with excess renewable electricity used to produce green hydrogen. For PtG to provide a sustainable solution, the electricity system must adopt decarbonization by shutting down fossil-based generators and accelerating the deployment of wind, solar, and nuclear power at the transmission level and DERs, such as biomass, microgeneration, and energy storage systems, at the distribution level [5].Integration between electric and gas grids could play a crucial role [6] in accommodating the demand growth while meeting climate-change targets. To reach the “30·60” decarbonization target (where carbon emissions start declining in 2030 and reach net zero in 2060), China is restructuring its power system to a new energy-based one. Given this new situation, this paper reviews previous studies on the power market and highlights key issues for future research as we seek to adapt to the new power system (NPS). Based on a systematic literature review, papers on the operational efficiency of the power market, participants’ bidding strategies and market supervision were identified. In a further step, papers with high relevance were analyzed in more detail. Then, key studies that focused on market trading under China’s new power system were picked out for further discussion. New studies were searched for that pertained to new energy mechanisms and bidding, the transition from coal-fired power, flexible resources and the technical applications of simulations. The quantitative analysis supports the construction of a basic paradigm for the study of power markets that is suitable for the new power system. Finally, the theoretical basis and application suggestions for power market simulations are introduced. This study summarized the existing research on the power market and further explored the key issues relating to the power market as it adapts to the NPS, hoping to inspire better research into China’s power sector, and promote safe, low-carbon, and sustainable development in China’s power industry.
